An experiment was conducted at BINA (Bangladesh Institute of Nuclear Agriculture) substation, Satkhira (saline area) on slightly calcareous silty clay soil during the boro season of 2009-2010 to investigate the effects of different combinations of inorganic fertilizers on growth and yield of STL-655 rice mutant cultivar. The fertilizer combinations used were; T1 (absolute control), T2 (N60 P20 K40 S10 Zn1), T3 (N80 P25 K50 S15 Zn1.5), T4 (N100 P30 K60 S20 Zn2), T5 (N120 P35 K70 S25 Zn3) and T6 (N140 P40 K80 S30 Zn4). The experiment was laid out in a randomized complete block design (RCBD) with three replications. The results revealed that grain and straw yields of STL-655 rice mutant responded significantly due to the different fertilizer combinations. The highest grain (3.95 t/ha) and straw yield (7.38 t/ha) was obtained in T6 (N140 P40 K80 S30 Zn4) which caused an increase of 60% grain yield and 27% straw yield over the control.

To enhance sustained rice production in saline area by reducing the use of chemical fertilizers as well as preserve eco-friendly environment

To ascertain optimum and economic rates of fertilizer for rice cultivation in saline area.

The experiment was conducted at Satkhira substation of BINA (Bangladesh Institute of Nuclear Agriculture) on slightly calcareous silty clay soil during the Boro season of 2009-2010. The effects of six different combinations of inorganic fertilizers like N, P, K, S and Zn. were investigated on STL-655 rice mutant cultivar. The treatment combinations were: T1 (absolute control), T2 (N60 P20 K40 S10 Zn1), T3 (N80 P25 K50 S15 Zn1.5), T4 (N100 P30 K60 S20 Zn2), T5 (N120 P35 K70 S25 Zn3) and T6 (N140 P40 K80 S30 Zn4). The trial was laid out in a randomized complete block design (RCBD) with three replications. The unit plot size was 5m x 4m. N, P, K, S and Zn were applied as Urea, TSP, MP, gypsum and zinc oxide, respectively. Urea was applied in three equal splits at final land preparation, active tillering stage and booting/panicle initiation stage of the crop. Forty days old three healthy seedlings of boro rice (STL-655 rice mutant) were transplanted per hill in the experimental plots at a plant spacing of 20 cm x 15 cm on 20 December, 2010 and the crop was harvested at maturity on 25 April, 2011. All the cultural practices were done in time. Ten hills were randomly selected from each plot for data collection. The recorded data were plant height, effective tillers/hill, panicle length, grains/panicle, 1000-grains weight, grain yield and straw yield. Grain and straw samples were analyzed for the determination of N, P, K and S contents. All the data were statistically analyzed following the F-test and the mean comparisons were made by DMRT at the 5% level.

Based on the results of study it may be concluded that application of T6 (N140 P40 K80 S30 Zn4) could be considered suitable for Satkhira area.
