Some Biological Aspects and Host Preferences of Pulse Beetle (callosobruchus Chinensis L.) on Different Varieties of Mungbean in Storage Condition

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

Two experiments were carried out at the Entomology laboratory of Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman Agricultural University (BSMRAU), Gazipur during the period from June to September 2007 to know some biological aspects of pulse beetle, Callosobruchus chinensis L. and to assess its preferred host on mungbean varieties in storage condition. Biological study indicates that different varieties of mungbean viz., BU mung 2, BARI mung 3, BARI mung 4, BARI mung 5, BARI mung 6, BINA moog 2 and BINA moog 5 had no significant influence on different life stage of pulse beetle. Host preference study indicates that the varities BU mug 2 was most preferred host while BINA moog 2 and BARI mung 5 were less preferred host to pulse beetle.

Objectives:

To identify susceptible or preferred variety/varieties of mungbean against Callosobruchus chinensis L.

Methodology:

The study on the biology and host preferences of Callosobruchus chinensis on different mungbean varieties were conducted during June to September, 2007 at the laboratory of the Department of Entomology, Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman Agricultural University (BSMRAU), Gazipur. The culture of C.chinensis was maintained in the laboratory and the mungbean varieties used in this study were collected from Pulse Research Section of Bangladesh Agricultural Research Institute, Joydebpur.

Biology of C. chinensis: The biology of C. chinensis was studied on six mungbean varieties viz., BARI mung 3, BARI mung 4, BARI mung 5, BARI mung 6, BINA moog 2, and BINA moog 5. Five gm of fresh and healthy mungbean seeds of each varieties were separately placed in each plastic jar (10 cm dia х 15cm height). One day old (0-24 hours) male and female beetles were released in each jar. Adults was removed from the jar after completion of egg lying. Then the seeds were kept in different Petri dishes for development of the insect. Observations on the duration of egg, larva, pupa and adult were recorded.

Host preferences of C. chinensis: Seven mungbean varieties were BARI mung 3. BARI mung 4, BARI mung 5, BARI mung 6, BINA moog 2, BINA moog 5, and BU mug 2 were used in this study. Two hundred gm mungbean seeds of each variety were taken in to the seven separate jars (10 cm dia х 15 cm height). One day old male and female beetle of C. chinensis were released in the jar and mouth of the jar was covered with fine meshed synthetic net and kept in the laboratory. After 48 hours the beetles were removed from the jar and the seeds along with eggs were left undisturbed in jars for further development. Observations on total number of eggs, percent adult emergence and percent seed weight loss were calculated by using the following formulae. In addition the weight of adult beetles was also recorded.
