Cotton Suitability Assessment of Fulbari Upazila

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

Fulbari Upazila is situated between 25^o53' & 26^o02' N latitude and between 89^o29' & 89^o40' E longitude covering an area of 16,073 hectares. Per capita land availability of this Upazila is only 0.10 ha. This Upazila is divided into two physiographic units namely Old Tista Floodplain and Young Tista Floodplain. The land comprises of high and low ridges and somewhat broad basins. Ridges are not inundated during monsoon. Basins are shallowly to deeply flooded. About 7,274 ha of highland are found in Fulbari Upazila which are potentially suitable for cotton cultivation.

Objectives:

1. Cotton suitability assessment of Fulbari Upazila.

2. Generate data for future cotton area extension.

Methodology:

A draft photo-interpretative soil and landform map is prepared by analyzing aerial photos of 2010. Semi-detailed soil survey is carried out to delineate highland in different union of the Upazila. During field survey soil and land type data, land use data are collected. Soil samples are collected @ one sample per 50-100 ha of land to assess soil fertility. Final soil and landform map is prepared by accommodating field observations. Report on cotton suitability is prepared by compiling survey data.The work started on 05-11-2014 and ended on 10-10-2015.

Achievement/Findings:

Per capita land availability of this Upazila is only 0.10 ha. This Upazila is divided into two physiographic units namely Old Tista Floodplain and Young Tista Floodplain. About 7,274 ha of highland are found in Fulbari Upazila which are potentially suitable for cotton cultivation. These lands are distributed in Naodanga (973ha), Shimulbari (639ha), Fulbari (1,308ha), Kashipur (1,694ha), Baravita (883ha), Bhangamor (1,332ha) union and Dasiarchhara (445ha). Presently high lands are under annual crops (papaya/banana/sugarcane/turmeric/indian apple); Mustard/potato/Boro-Tobacco/Jute-T.Aman; Maize-Fallow-T.Aman; Rabi vegetables- Kharif vegetables; Rabi crops/Boro-Fallow-T.Aman. Pirgachha, Palasbari, Jamun, Gangachara and Chilmari soils are found in high land. Improvement of intermittently drained soils by providing drainage channels are needed to cultivate cotton. Farmers needs to be trained on techniques of cotton cultivation ,harvesting, processing and marketing.
