Effect of Different Levels of Nitrogen and Mulching on Growth and Yield of Chinese Cabbage

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

An experiment was conducted at the Horticultural Farm of Bangladesh Agricultural University, Mymensingh during the period from October, 2000 to February, 2001 to study the effect of different levels of nitrogen and mulching on growth and yield of Chinese cabbage. The experiment consisted of four levels of nitrogen (N) viz., 0, 80, 160, 240 kg N/ha and four different mulching treatments viz., no mulch, black polythene mulch, water hyacinth mulch and rice straw mulch. The results of the experiment revealed that levels of nitrogen and mulching had Significant influence on the growth and yield of Chinese cabbage. The maximum plant height, spread of plant, days to initiation of head, thickness of head, diameter of head, number of roots/plant, root length, stem length, number of folded leaves/plant, number of unfolded leaves/plant, fresh weight of roots, weight of unfolded leaves, dry weight of roots, dry matter of head, days to head maturity, compactness of head, fresh weight of head, marketable yield (77.13 t/ha) and gross yield (103.90 t/ha) were recorded when nitrogen was applied at the rate of 240 kg/ha. The highest gross yield (104.04 t/ha) was obtained from the black polythene mulch followed by water hyacinth mulch (99.60 t/ha). Black polythene mulch produced the highest marketable yield (78.14 t/ha). The maximum gross yield (118.4 t/ha) and marketable yield (94.03 t/ha) were found in the treatment combination of 240 kg N/ha with black polythene mulch.

Objectives:

To standardize the levels of nitrogen and mulching in order to get higher yield of Chinese cabbage.

Methodology:

The variety Chisato of Chinese cabbage was used as the experimental material. The seeds were F₁ hybrid and seedlings were raised at the Horticultural center, Kewatkhali, Mymensingh under special care. Twenty grams of seeds were sown in the seedbed on 16 October, 2000 to get 25 day old seedling at the time of transplanting. After sowing, the seeds were covered with finished light soil. Shade was provided by bamboo mat (Chatai) over the seedbed to protect the young seedling from scorching sunlight or rainfall. There were 4 nitrogen levels coupled with 4 mulching having 16 treatment combinations such as N_oM_o, N_oM₁, N_oM₂, N_oM₃, N₁M₀, N₁M₁, N₁M₂, N₁M₃, N₂M₀, N₂M₁, N₂M₂, N₂M₃, N₃M₀, N₃M₁, N₃M₂ and N₃M₃. The factorial experiment was laid out in Randomized Complete Block Design (RCBD) with three replications. Recommended doses of well decomposed cowdung (2.16 kg/plot), TSP (108 g/plot) and MP (129 g/plot) were applied. The entire amount of cowdung was applied at the time of land preparation. The whole amount of TSP and MP were applied and mixed well with the soil of each 2.4 mxl.8 m plot during final land preparation. According to the treatments four different doses of nitrogen were applied in three split applications. One third of nitrogen was top dressed in ring method after 15 days of transplanting. The remaining of the nitrogen was top dressed in two equal installments at 30 days of transplanting and at initiation of head formation. The fresh water hyacinth plants were chopped into small pieces (5-7 cm) and dried in the sun for three days before placing over the plot. The thickness of water hyacinth and rice straw mulches were maintained at 8-10 cm. Miral 10 G 12 g/plot was applied for controlling the soil borne insects and Rovral 50 wp @ 2g/L of water was applied for controlling leaf spot disease. The crop was harvested at maturity from each unit plot over the period from 22 January to 1 February, 2001. During the plant growth, 4 plants were selected randomly from each unit plot for data collection. The data were analysed statistically and the analysis of variance was performed by F-test while significance of difference between pairs of treatment means were evaluated by the Least Significance Difference (LSD) test at 5% level of probability.
