Effect of Different Levels of Nitrogen on Wheat Grain Yield and Protein Content

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

An experiment was conducted at the Agronomy Field Laboratory, Bangladesh Agricultural University, Mymensingh during the period between December 1996 and March 1997 to study the effect of different levels of nitrogen on wheat grain yield and protein content and also to find out the economic dose of nitrogen for wheat. Two wheat varieties (viz. Aghrani and Kanchan) and seven levels of nitrogen (viz. 0, 40, 80, 120, 160, 200 and 240 kg N ha^-1) were included as experimental treatments replicated three times. Results revealed that there was no significant difference in grain yield and protein content between the two cultivars. Grain yield increased due to application of nitrogen up to 160 kg N ha^-1 above which grain yield again decreased. Protein content increased with the increasing rate of nitrogen up to 200 kg N ha^-1 and then decreased. Economic analysis showed that the application of 120 and 160 kg N ha^-1 were judicious for variety Aghrani and Kanchan, respectively.

Objectives:

To study the effect of different nitrogen levels on the yield and protein content of wheat grain and to recommend a nitrogen dose based on economic analysis under the agroclimatic condition of Mymensingh, Bangladesh

Methodology:

The experiment was conducted at the Agronomy Field Laboratory, Bangladesh Agricultural University, Mymensingh during the period from December 1996 to March 1997 to study the effect of different nitrogen levels on the wheat grain yield and protein content. Two wheat varieties (viz. Aghrani and Kanchan) and seven levels of nitrogen (viz. 0,40,80, 120, 160, 200 and 240 kg N ha^-1) were included as experimental treatments, which were replicated thrice. The experiment was laid out in a split-plot design assigning varieties in the main plots and nitrogen levels in the sub-plots. The unit plot size was 5m x 4m and the distance between plots were 1m. The experimental land was medium high with silty clay loam soil having pH 7.34. The soil contained 2.61 % organic matter, 1.514% organic carbon, 0.121% total N, 14% available P, 0.09 me available K 100g^-1 soil and 10 ppm of available S. The land was prepared properly and was fertilized with 80 kg P₂O₅, 60 kg K₂O, 15 kg S, 5 kg Zn and 1.5 kg B ha^-1, respectively through triple super phosphate, muriate of potash, gypsum, zinc sulphate and boric acid. Nitrogen was applied in the form of urea as per experimental specification. Total amount of all other fertilizers along with 1/3^rd urea were applied at the time of final land preparation. Remaining urea was applied in two equal splits at 26 and 46 days after sowing (DAS). Seeds were sown continuously by hand in 20 cm apart rows on 9 December 1996 at 120 kg ha^-1. Weeding was done twice at 25 and 45 DAS. Two irrigations were applied at 27 and 47 DAS, The crop was harvested at full maturity on 30 March 1997 (111 DAS) and data on yield and yield components were recorded. Total N content in grains were analysed following the micro-Kjeldahl method, and the values of N were multiplied by 6.25 to obtain the protein content in grain. Data analysis was done using computer package programme M-Stat C. Economic analysis for the cost and benefit was done using partial budget.

Achievement/Findings:

The result of marginal economic analysis suggested that a farmer having low investment capability may at least choose 40 kg N ha^-1 to get maximum rate of return. On the other hand, a farmer having medium capital base and targeting higher marginal rate of return can choose 80 kg N ha^-1. A rich farmer with high resource-base, can utilize 120 kg N ha^-1 for Aghrani and 160 kg N ha^-1 for Kanchan to get maximum economic benefit in terms of net profit.
