Babuganj Upazila is situated between 22o44' & 22o56' N latitude and 90o15' & 90o23' E longitude covering an area of 15,247 hectares. This Upazila consists of 6 union and 78 mouza. Per capita land availability is 0.11ha. This Upazila is divided into two physiographic units- Ganges Floodplain and Ganges Tidal Floodplain.About 1,446 ha highland is potentially suitable for cotton cultivation. Farmers need to be motivated for cotton cultivation. The work started on 02-11-2014 and ended on 05-10-2015.

1. Cotton suitability assessment of Babuganj Upazila.

2. Create database for future cotton area extension.

A draft photo-interpretative soil and landform map is prepared by analyzing aerial photos of 2010. Semi-detailed soil survey is carried out to delineate high lands of the Upazila. Soil and land types are checked during field survey. land use data is recorded. Soil samples are collected @ one sample per 50-100 of high lands for fertility assessment. Final cotton suitability map is prepared by accommodating survey findings. Cotton suitability report is prepared by compiling all data.

Babuganj Upazila is situated between 22o44' & 22o56' N latitude and 90o15' & 90o23' E longitude covering an area of 15,247 hectares. This Upazila consists of 6 union and 78 mouza. Per capita land availability is 0.11ha. This Upazila is divided into two physiographic units- Ganges Floodplain and Ganges Tidal Floodplain.About 1,446 ha highland is potentially suitable for cotton cultivation. High lands are scattered and distributed in Jahangirnagar (155ha), Kedarpur (74ha), Dehergati (160ha), Rahmatpur (379ha), Chandpasha (633ha) and Madhobpasha (45ha) union.Sara and Gopalpur are the high land soils. Both the soils are intermittently drained. So, drainage need to be improved in cotton fields by providing drainage channels. Present cropping patterns are annual crops (papaya/banana/sugarcane/bittle leaf/turmeric); Rabi crops-B.aus-T.Aman; Chili/wheat-Jute-T.Aman; Rabi vegetables-Kharif vegetables; Rabi crops-Fallow-T.Aman; Rabi crops-Jute/dhaincha-Fallow and Rabi crops-fallow-T.Aman seedbed.Farmers need to be trained on techniques of cotton cultivation, harvesting, processing and marketing.
