Cotton Suitability Assessment of Dhamrai Upazila

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

Dhamrai Upazila is situated between 23^o49' & 24^o03' N latitude and 90^o00' & 90^o15' E longitude covering an area of 29,715 hectares. This Upazila consists of 16 union and 306 mouza. Per capita land availability is only 0.08ha. About 1,180 hectares of high lands are potentially suitable for cotton cultivation. Farmers need to motivated for cotton cultivation.

Objectives:

1. Cotton suitability assessment of Dhamrai Upazila.

2. Create database for future cotton area extension.

Methodology:

A draft photo-interpretative soil and landform map is prepared by analyzing aerial photos of 2010 of Dhamrai Upazila. Semi-detailed soil survey was conducted for delineating high lands of the Upazila. Soil and land types were checked during field survey. Land use was recorded. Soil samples were collected @ one sample for every 50-100 ha of high land for fertility assessment. Final cotton suitability map was prepared by accommodating field observations. The work was started on 05-10-2014 and ended on 05-10-20015.

Achievement/Findings:

Dhamrai Upazila is situated between 23^o49' & 24^o03' N latitude and 90^o00' & 90^o15' E longitude covering an area of 29,715 hectares. This Upazila consists of 16 union and 306 mouza. Dhamrai Upazila is divided into two major physiographic units Old Brahmaputra Floodplain and Mixed Young Brahmaputra Floodplain & Madhupur Tract. Per capita land availability is only 0.08ha. About 1,180 hectares of high lands are potentially suitable for cotton cultivation which are scattered in Chouhat (70ha), Amta. Report on cotton suitability of Dhamrai upazila was prepared by compiling map data and field survey data. (40ha), Balia (90ha), Jadobpur (320ha), Baishakanda (150ha), Kusura (225ha), Bhararia (30ha), Gangutia (60ha), Sanora (80ha), Sombag (90ha) and Dhmarai (25ha) union. Present cropping patterns in high land are mixed Timber trees and fruit trees; annual crops (Lemon/sugarcane/ banana/ pineapple/ ginger/turmeric) inter-cropped with potato/pulse/chili/mustard; Rabi vegetables-Kahrif vegetables; Rabi vegetables- T.Aus/Jute/Dhaincha-T.Aman; Mustard/wheat/Maize-Jute/Dhaincha-T.Aman. Sonatala and Silmandi are two high land soils. They are intermittently drained. So drainage need to be improved if cotton is cultivated by providing drainage channels in cotton field.
