Water Management for Rice-wheat System in Bangladesh: Chuadanga Area-1997

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

Plastic pipes were used to reduce the conveyance loss of irrigation water at Chuadanga and Rajshahi area for irrigating different crops. The time required irrigating a particular plot with plastic pipe and earthen channel were recorded in each irrigation. It was observed from the study that at Chuadanga area about 4.45 ha of land was irrigated during rabi season 1997 by using plastic pipe and on an average 0.094 ha of land was irrigated per hour. Through earthen channel 0.415 ha of land was irrigated in comparison with plastic pipe irrigation and on an average 0.052 ha of land was irrigated per hour. About double area can be irrigated per hour by using plastic pipe instead of earthen channel. In T.Aman season the plastic pipes were used for supplemental irrigation. The crop was transplanted on 2 August. The seedling age was 42 days and the variety was BRRI dhan30. During land preparation about 150 mm of irrigation water was required. After that there was no demand for irrigation water up to 20 October due to heavy rainfall. After 20 October, 4 irrigation were applied, amount of which was 462 mm. The total rainfall during the growing period was 518 mm and the average yield was 4.67 t/ha.

Achievement/Findings:

The use of plastic pipe has a number of advantages which are listed below:

About 40-50% of the irrigation water is saved by reducing conveyance loss and can be used for irrigating undulated lands
A set of pipe can be used in different STW at different locations.
Irrigation water is uniformly distributed and in case of shortage of irrigation water light irrigation supply is possible.
No canal is required for irrigation which saves land, labor and money
Higher elevated area than the delivery pipe can also be irrigated by using this pipe.
