Water Management for Rice-wheat System in Bangladesh-rajshahi Area-1997

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

Plastic pipes were used to reduce the conveyance loss of irrigation water at Rajshahi area for irrigating different crops. The time required irrigating a particular plot with plastic pipe and earthen channel were recorded in each irrigation. About 7.81 ha of land was irrigated by using plastic pipe during rabi season 1997. The average irrigation coverage was 0.054 ha/hr. But without plastic pipe 0.3 ha area was irrigated and the average irrigation coverage was 0.029 ha/hr. The conveyance loss was reduced when plastic pipes were used. So farmers are very much interested to use the pipe for irrigation. The price is also not very high. It is within the capacity of a medium farmer. Only 400-500 ft pipe is enough for a STW system. After demonstration a good number of farmers have purchased the pipe. Field days were organized. In T.Aman season the plastic pipes were also used for supplemental irrigation. About 38 days old seedlings were transplanted also on 2 August. The variety was BR11 and crop was harvested on 27 November. About 150 mm of irrigation water was required for land preparation and 1 irrigation of 228 mm was supplied during early November. There was sufficient rainfall during the growing period. The total amount of rainfall was 598 mm and average yield was 4.90 t/ha.

About 40-50% of the irrigation water is saved by reducing conveyance losss and can be used for irrigating undulated lands A set of pipe can be used in different STW at different locations. Irrigation water is uniformly distributed and in case of shortage of irrigation water light irrigation supply is possible. No canal is required for irrigation which saves land, labor and money >Higher elevated area than the delivery pipe can also be irrigated by using this pipe
