Assessment of Drought, Its Impact and Alleviation Opportunities in Major Rainfed Lowland Rice Areas: Rajbari District-1997

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

The study had tried to find out the relation between farmer’s farming practices and effect of rain. Farmers’ cultivate mixed Aus and Aman (local variety). From survey report it was found 50% farmers sown mixed crop on 13 April and harvested Aus on 15 August and Aman on 22 November in 1997. Probability analysis at 50% level reveals that 497 mm rainfall occurs from June to July, 483 mm from August to November and 61 mm only in the month of October. Thus rainfall was sufficient for T.Aman transplant and insufficient for reproductive stage of rice. It had been found from survey report that before 1980 the area was flood prone. But in spite of establishment of flood protection embankment in late 1980 still there was drainage problem in this area and as a result at the time of tillering stage the crop goes under submerged condition. Since total ET during reproductive period of Aman was higher than total rainfall and relative water supply (RWS) was 0.03, drought affects the crop and consequently yield was reduced. It was found from the study that average yield of mixed crop was 3.2 t/ha

Objectives:

To study the drought alleviation opportunities for enhancing and sustaining farm productivity

Methodology:

This study has been taken at Pangsha thana of Rajbari district (north-west part of Bangladesh). The study of Pangsha has been initiated with some survey on farmers’ cultural practices, yield of rice etc. and also knowing the rainfall probability of each 5 days of each month at 50 % and 80% dependable level. Rainfall of 36 years of both places was collected from BWDB and probability analysis has been done.

Achievement/Findings:

The study area was drought prone at two stages of Aman rice i.e.,at the beginning of the crop season which can cause delay in transplanting; and at the beginning of the ripening stage (from early October). The probability of 10 day and 15 day droughts during the ripening period were 73 and 53%, respectively. The RWS in an average year was 0.79 and can go down to 0.51 in 2 out of ten years. The crop yield was uncorrelated with total seasonal rainfall but it has a good correlation with rainfall during the ripening period.
