Salinity Management and Irrigation Potential in the Selected Coastal Area of Bangladesh-1997

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

The experiment was conducted in Aus, Aman and Boro seasons at Dumuria thana of Khulna district. As it was observed from the survey work that in dry season, only few crops (like sesame, gram and vegetables) can grow under the salinity level of 4-10 dS/m. Therefore, raised bed system was made. In the raised bed, during Boro season, cowpea was planted to monitor the salt movement in the top soil of the raised bed. After establishment the crops were destroyed by the excessive rainfall. But the salinity was monitored. It was observed from that the top soil salinity in 0-15 cm raised bed was ranged from 1.7 to 4.5 dS/m from the month of January to May. But the salinity variation in the plain land varied from 1.9 to 6.5 during the same period. It was calculated that raised bed with drain can leach down about 31% salt more than the land without drainage. Also it was observed that in the layer below 100 cm, the salinity level remains less than 4 dS/m during the dry season. In Aman season, BR23 rice was grown to the experimental plots under the recommended management. But in the farmer’s field, local variety rice Jotai was grown. It was found from the experimental results that the BR23 yielded about 1 t/ha more than the local Jotai. The average yield of BR23 was 3.92 t/ha and of Jotai was 2.95 t/ha. BR23 variety was planted on 5 August and harvested on 12 December, 1997. The salinity level of the soil was about 1.5 dS/m. And it can be concluded that BR23 can grow well in the low salinity level.
