Comparative Water Management of Wet-seeded and Transplanted Methods of Rice Cultivation in Boro Season for Increasing Water Use Efficiency: BARIsal-1997

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

The study was conducted at Gazipur and Barisal to find out the water required and yield obtained from WSR and TPR. Experiments were carried out with four water treatments of which T₁ was continuous standing water, T₂ intermittent irrigation, T₃ as T₁ and 20 days no irrigation at vegetative stage and T₄ as T₁ and 20 days no irrigation at reproductive stage. The treatments T₃ and T₄ could not properly maintain due to rainfall. For WSR total amount of irrigation water required were 1022 mm, 869 mm, 877 mm and 879 mm under T₁, T₂, T₃ and T₄, respectively. For TPR total water required were 969 mm, 857 mm, 807 mm and 805 mm under T₁, T₂, T₃ and T₄ respectively. About 252 mm and 437 mm rainfall were used for WSR and TPR respectively. The highest water productivity was obtained 4.11 kg/ha/mm from WSR and 3.63 kg/ha/mm from TPR under T₂ in WSR and T₃ in TPR. In WSR highest yield (4.65 t/ha) was obtained from T₃ and in TPR the highest was obtained (4.59 t/ha) from T₂.

Methodology:

Experiments were carried out with four water treatments of which T₁ was continuous standing water, T₂ intermittent irrigation, T₃ as T₁ and 20 days no irrigation at vegetative stage and T₄as T₁ and 20 days no irrigation at reproductive stage. The treatments T₃and T₄ could not properly maintain due to rainfall. BR 11 was used. Fertilizer doses were 100:80:60:20 kg/ha of NPKS. All P and K were applied during land preparation. N was applied in 4 equal splits as topdress. 1^st, 2^nd and 3^rd topdresses were used after 20 days of seeding, early vegetative stage and late vegetative stage, respectively. Final topdress was applied at panicle initiation stage of the crop. Gypsum was applied as topdress after 35 days of sowing the seeds. Ronstar was used to control weed and diazinon 60 EC for insects.

Achievement/Findings:

The highest water productivity was obtained 4.11 kg/ha/mm from WSR and 3.63 kg/ha/mm from TPR under intermittent irrigation in WSR and continuous irrigation and 20 days no irrigation at vegetative stage in TPR. In WSR highest yield (4.65 t/ha) was obtained from continuous irrigation and 20 days no irrigation at vegetative stageand in TPR the highest was obtained (4.59 t/ha) from intermittent irrigation.
