Evaluation of Micro-level Horizontal Drainage in Water Logged Soil for the Development of Upland Environment-1995

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

An investigation was conducted at Barisal and Potuakhali area during rabi season with the objectives of evaluation of existing on farm Sorjan drainage system in south center zone of Bangladesh (Barisal and Potuakhali) and to determination of suitable drain spacing for the above locations. A field survey on existing Sorjan drain-dimensions (size and spacing) was conducted in this area. Hydraulic conductivity for different soils was determined by the field method.The tidal fluctuation was recorded by installing a staff gage. It was found from the field investigation that mainly two types of Sorjan drains were practicing in those area i.e. open system and mini pond system. Open system was found adapting where maximum tidal variation was around 1 m. It was found that most of the farmers adapting open system without providing local drainage base W and height of the water table depth D. As a result, their crops were frequently suffered from water logging in the rainy season. The maximum water logging duration was found 22 days out of 90 days (June, July and August) for the perennial crops (Banana, Papaya) because of low height of raised bed. The recorded data showed that the maximum and minimum tidal variations were 1.2 m and 0.4 m, respectively. The hydraulic conductivity of Barisal soil was 1 m/day. The sample survey showed that the average height of the raised bed was 1.0 m from the land surface and the drain spacing was found 2.25 m only. The length of the raised bed strip was 50-55 m and the width was 3 to 5 m. it was observed that with the farmers drain spacing, about 50- to 70% of land was required to excavate to make the raised bed under tidal variation of 1 m.
