Evaluation of Micro-level Horizontal Drainage in Water Logged Soil for the Development of Upland Environment:crop Productivity of the System-1995

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

An investigation was conducted at Barisal and Patuakhali area during rabi season with the objectives of evaluation of existing on farm Sorjan drainage system in south center zone of Bangladesh (Barisal and Potuakhali). A field survey was conducted in this area. The yields and management practices of different crops were recorded by interviewing the farmers. It was found in Barisal and Potuakhali district that the types of crop grown in the Sorjan system widely varies depending on the basis of soil organic matter content and depth of tidal variation. In the Swarupkathi model, crop grown in the Sorjan-bed are mostly perennial crop like guava, citrus fruit, nursery cutting etc. But the farmers of Lebukhali area grow mostly winter vegetable like cauliflower, cabbage, lalshak, tomato, country bean, seasonal vegetable like bitter guard, snake gourd, brinjal etc. It was also found from the survey report that banana is the most popular perennial crops in Ladukhali than Swarupkathi area. In Barisal, the cropping pattern in the medium high land (ridge) was found fallow-T.Aman (LV) and in the rabi season chili, mung bean, sweet potato, kheshari, chickpea, cowpea, melon, sesame and ground nut. In the flat topography, the pattern was T.Aus (LV)/ B. Aus (LV) /T.Aus (MV)-T.Aman (LV)-kheshari/mung bean/ Fallow. In Lebukhali, Patuakhali area the cropping pattern was T.Aus (LV)-T.Aman (LV)-Fallow or rabi cops (Kheshari) was the predominant cropping pattern of the medium high land soil. Farmer used urea, TSP, MP and cowdung for different crops in Sorjan system.
