Minimizing Irrigation Demand by Utilizing Rain Water for Rice Based Cropping in Irrigated Environment-1995

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

A study was conducted at BRRI fram, Gazipur in 1995 to test two rice based cropping patterns. The pattern T₁ was Non-rice-Rice-Rice and pattern T₂ was Rice-Fallow-Rice which covers Boro to T. Aman seasons. Every pattern was replicated in three times. S&P was directly measured by using a meter scale installed in the paddy field. Evaporation and rainfall data was collected from Physiology division, BRRI. Seedling spacing was 15*20 cm and fertilizer doses were 80-60-40 kg/ha of NPK. The seed rate of 50 kg/ha of gram was used in the rabi season. Irrigation water was measured by using a v-notch. Irrigation cost was calculated on the basis of Tk.4.38 per mm of irrigation water. Five sqm. area was harvested for grain and straw yield and finally adjusted by 14% mc. In T₁ pattern, grain and straw yield of gram were 500 and 1000 kg/ha. In Aus season, average grain and straw yield were 3.56 and 4.0 t/ha, respectively. Rice was grown in rainfed condition and 890 mm of rainfall was used in the growing period. WUE was 70%. In Aman season, average grain and straw yield were 3.35 and 4.20 t/ha, respectively. Irrigation and rainfall amounts were 381 and 438 mm in the growing period. WUE was 58%. Total cost and gross returns of T₁ pattern were Tk.39715 and Tk.57098. Net return and BCR of T₁ pattern were Tk.17383 and 1.44. In T₂ pattern, in boro season, average grain and straw yield of rice were 4.98 and 5.00 t/ha. Total amount of irrigation and rainfall were 1023 171 mm in the growing period. WUE was 82%. In Aman season, average grain and straw yield of rice were 4.96 and 4.50 t/ha. Irrigation and rainfall were used 174 and 848 mm in the growing period. WUE was 68%. Total cost and gross returns of T₂ pattern were Tk.3759 and Tk.65068. Net return and BCR of T₂ pattern were Tk.27477 and 1.73. The study indicated that T₂ pattern is economically more profitable than T₁pattern.

In Rice-Fallow-Rice pattern, WUE was 68%. Total cost and gross returns of Rice-Fallow-Rice pattern were Tk.3759 and Tk.65068. Net return and BCR of Rice-Fallow-Rice pattern were Tk.27477 and 1.73. The study indicated that Rice-Fallow-Rice pattern was economically more profitable than Non-rice-Rice-Ricepattern.
