Agro-hydrologic and Economic Analysis of On-farm Reservoirs for Drought Alleviation in Rainfed Rice Lands of North-west Bangladesh:physical Characteristics-1995

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

The study was conducted to determine the agro-hydrologic parameters that influences the performance of OFRs during the two wet seasons of 1994-95. The physical characteristics of the 10 OFRs studied area indicated that average depth and area of the OFRs are 1.94 m and 0.069 ha, respectively. The average area of the OFRs was about 14% of the service area and 10% of the catchment area. Irrigation was provided from the OFRs by centrifugal pumps of about 15 lps capacity in high elevation and by gravity flow in lower elevation. Fish culture in the OFRs was not common practiced mainly due to joint ownership of the OFRs and uncertainty in water availability throughout the year. The farmers’ survey revealed that about 87% of the farmers grow modern varieties of rice in the study area the average yield was 3.7 t/ha. The cropping pattern was dominated by rice and only about one third of the farmers grow a second upland crop (mostly gram) following the wet season (Aman) rice. During the two years study period it was observed that 50% of the farmers transplanted rice by the middle of July and harvested by November. Farmers’ survey revealed that about 65% of the farmers preferred to transplant and harvest at the mid-July and mid-November. Supplemental irrigation was normally applied during the second half of October when the crop was at early ripening stage. The mean rainfall during the first two weeks of October droped to about 50 mm from more than 100 mm compare to the last two weeks of September. Moreover, it declined to about 10 mm at the last weeks of October.

Objectives:

To determine the agro-hydrologic parameters that influences the performance of OFRs

Methodology:

The study was conducted during the two wet seasons of 1994-95. The physical parameters (area, volume, depth and side slope) of 10 randomly selected OFRs, owned and operated by the farmers in the study area were measured. The catchment area and the service area (irrigated area) of each of the OFRs were delineated through field inspection. A stuff gage was installed in each of the selected OFRs in order to measure the change in water level. Crop production practices of 20 randomly selected farmers; 10 with access to the selected 10 OFRs and the rest without access to any irrigation but within the vicinity of the selected OFRs, were monitored and surveyed during each of the two years in order to characterize their land use and productivity. For the survey, pre-designed questionnaire was used and apart from crop production practices information on OFR water use, construction, operation and maintenance costs, irrigation cost and crop yield were collected.
