Crop Establishment Method and Time of Planting for Escaping Water Stress and Cold Under Rainfed Low Land Rice Consortium (water Management Component):wue-1995

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

The experiment was conducted during T. Aman 1995 in Rajabari area of Rajshahi with 4 different transplanting dates (1^st June, 15^th June, 1^st July and 15^th July). The PVC tubes (one meter long and 2 cm dia) were installed in 16 selected plots of BR11 with 4 plots from each transplanting date. The readings of the PVC tubes were taken at an interval of 3 days to know the water status of the plots. Seepage meter was also installed and readings were taken daily from each of the 16 selected plots to calculate the seepage and percolation rate. Rainfall and evaporation data were collected from the nearest agromet station. Crop cut samples were harvested for yield estimation. Soil samples were collected from each of the selected plots for determination of soil moisture status and for developing soil moisture characteristics curves. Samples were collected from 3 different depths (0-10 cm, 10-20 cm and 20-30 cm). The WUE was calculated. The 1^st planting plots (1^st June) received the highest amount of rainfall (1421 mm) and the 4^th planting plots (15^th July) received the lowest amount of rainfall (846 mm) during the growing period. The average yields of BR11 of the 4 different transplanting dates (1^st June, 15^th June, 1^st July and 15^th July) were 3.65, 3.87, 3.39 and 2.9 t/ha, respectively. Therefore, the highest yield was obtained from 15^th June sowing and the lowest yield was for 15^th July sowing. The yield was low because the 1^st and 2^nd planting crops suffered from water stress during June and 1^st half of July. The 3^rd and 4^th planting crops suffered from water stress during the later part of October and November. For the study plots WUE was more than 100%. The WUE ranged from 116% to 220%. As a result, the crops suffered from water stress. This study indicates that 5^th June sowing was the best in respect of yield and water use. However, 1^st June sowing also produced almost similar yield which may be the second choice for sowing date.
