Effect of Different Methods of Application of Trichoderma in Controlling Foot and Root Rot of Lentil

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

The effect of different methods of Trichoderma application against foot and root rot caused by Fusarium oxysporum of lentil was evaluated at Bangladesh Institute of Nuclear Agriculture, Mymensingh during 2003-04. Soil treatment with Trichoderma viride was found to be more effective for controlling the disease than seed treatment and soil drenching. The highest germination (97.33%), plant stand (91.33%), plant growth and seed weight were recorded in "soil treatment" for application of Trichoderma viride. The highest foot and root rot was found in control while the lowest was observed in seed + soil treatment. In case of foot and root rot incidence, soil and seed + soil treatment yielded the similar result. The highest increase of plant stand (28%) was found when the soil was treated with Trichoderma viride.

Objectives:

To identify the suitable method of application of Trichoderma in controlling foot and root rot of lentil.

Methodology:

A pot experiment was carried out by artificial inoculation and these studies were conducted in the glasshouse, Plant Pathology division, Bangladesh Institute of Nuclear Agriculture, Mymensingh, Bangladesh during 2003-04 following the methods of Khan et al. (1998). The experiment was laid out in CRD with four replications. Five different treatments are as follows: (i) Seed treatment, (ii) Soil treatment, (iii) Seed + Soil treatment and (iv) Soil drenching and Control Pathogen alone. Soil was collected from the field laboratory of the Department of Plant Pathology, Bangladesh Agricultural University, Mymensingh and dried. Decomposed cow dung from the Dairy Farm of Bangladesh Agricultural University, Mymensingh was added to it. The dried soil was mixed uniformly with well-decomposed cowdung at 2:1 (soil: cow dung) sterilized with formalin (40%) at the rate of 5 ml fomalin diluted with 20 ml of water for 4 kg soil. The fomalin treated soils were covered with polythene sheet for 48 hrs and then exposed to 48 hrs aeration before pot filling with 4 kg/pot (Dashgupta, 1988; Hossain, 2000). A total of 20 pots were filled with the treated soil. Fusarium oxysporum was grown on chickpea bran following Khan et al. (1998). The isolate of Fusarium oxysporum grown on chickpea bran was applied in pot soil before 3 days of seed sowing @ 5g/kg of soil (Sivan et al. 1984 and Hadar et al. 1979). A total of 20 pots were inoculated with the inoculum. The isolate of Trichoderma viride was applied at the time of seed sowing. Seed treatment was done following the method of Begum et al. (1998). Twenty seeds per pot were sown in equal distances and 2-3 cm depth in the soil. Soil was moistened and weeding was done whenever necessary. Following data were collected: a) Germination (%), b) Pre-emergence death (%), c) Foot and root rot (%), d) Plant stand (%), e) Seed weight pot^-1(g), f) Fresh shoot weight pot^-1, g) Fresh root weight pot^-1, h) Number of pod pot^-1 and i) Pod weight pot^-1.

The highest germination (47%) and plant population (91%) of lentil were recorded in "soil treatment" with Trichoderma against foot and root rot of lentil.
