Methods of Application of Trichoderma Harzianum for Controlling Collar Rot of Lentil

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

The effect of different application methods of Trichoderma harzianum on collar rot disease of lentil caused by Sclerotium rolfsii was evaluated at Bangladesh Institute of Nuclear Agriculture, Mymensingh. The methods evaluated were (i) Soil treatment with T. harzianum (ii) Seed treatment with T. harzianum (iii) Seed + soil treatment with T. harzianum and (iv) Soil drenching with T. harzianum. Soil was inoculated with the inoculum of T. harzianum grown on chickpea bran (5g kg^-1). For seed treatment T. harzianum inoculum (2 × 10⁸ conidia/seed) was thoroughly mixed with seeds. In soil drenching method the suspension of T. harzianum (1 × 10²spore/ml) was applied to the soil. Soil treatment with T. harzianum was found the most effective for controlling collar rot disease compared to other methods. The least collar rot incidence (25.25%), the highest germination (74.25%), plant stand (49.00%) and seed weight increase over control (708.62%), fresh shoot weight (19.04 g pot^-1) and root weight (2.03g pot^-1) were found in this treatment. Plant stand was positively correlated with germination but negatively correlated with collar rot incidence.

Objectives:

To identify the suitable method of application of Trichoderma harzianum for controlling collar rot of lentil.

Methodology:

A pot experiment was carried out by artificial inoculation of Sclerotium rolfsii in Bangladesh Institute of Nuclear Agriculture following CRD with four replications. The isolate of Trichoderma harzianum was applied and data were taken following the method of Dubey and Patel (2000) and Begum et al. 1998.
