Sujangar Upaila lies between 23o48' & 24o00' N latitude and 89o23' & 89o39' E longitude covering an area of 33,144 hectares. This Upazila was divided into 10 mapping units (1-10) depending on variation of landfrom, land type and soil types recognized in the Upazila. Two land forms- ridge and basin were identified in the Upazila. Two land types high land and medium high land were indentified in ridges and three land types-medium low land, low land and very low land were identified in basins. Ridge soils are Sara,  Gopalpur and Ishwardi. Whereas basin soils are Ishwardi, Ghior and Batra. Clay soils dominate in the Upazila followed by loam. Ishwardi soil dominate the Upazila followed by Ghior and Sara. Water recedes in normal time from about 37% of the area followed by early (15%) and very early (14%). Poorly drained soils occupy about 58% and intermittently drained soils occupy about 18% of the Upazila. In total 132 top soil composite samples were collected and analyzed in the laboratory. Sixteen cropping major cropping patterns were recorded in the Upazila modern T.Aman and Boro being the dominant crop followed by rabi crops. The soils are in general deficient in N. K varies from high to very high, P & Zn varies from low to high, Cu medium and B varies from medium to optimum. Cultivation of irrigated Boro (modern) is profitable in clay loam to clay soils. Rabi crops like onion/wheat/mustard/lentil/khesari/cowpea and jute may be cultivated in clay loam soils. Large waterbodies of Dulai, Ahmadpur and Hatkahli union is suiatble for fish culture. Surface water may be utilized for irrigation.

  Land management

1. To create updated soil and land resource inventory.

2.  To assess soil fertility and fertilizer recommendation.

3.. Updating of Upazila Soil and Land Resource Utilization Guide of Sujanagar Upazila.

A draft photo-interpretative soil and landform map was prepared by analyzing recent aerial photo of Sujanagar Upazila collected from Survey of Bangladesh. Sujanagar Upazila lying under Ganges Floodplain was divided into 10 mapping units depending on varaibility of landform, land type and soils. Semi-detailed soil survey was carried out to investigate the soil and land resources. Traverses were made across the catena for ground truthing of mapping units. Soils were checked by digging small pits, land use and management data were recorded from each checking points by interviewing the farmers. Soil samples were collected @ one sample per 200 hectare of a particular mapping unit covering each land type and soil type. Soils thus collected was sent to laboratory for fertility analyses. Final soil and land form map was prepared by accommodating the changed observed during field survey. Upazila soil and land resources utilization guide was updated by compiling all physical and chemical data. The work was started on 01-11-2006 and ended on 05-12-2007.
