Updating of Upazila Soil and Land Resources Utilization Guide, Kalapara Upazila

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

Kalapara Upazila is situated between 21^o48' & 22^o07' N latitude and 90^o05' & 90^o23' E longitude covering an area of 47,194 hectares. This Upazila lying in the Ganges Tidal Floodplain physigrpahy (AEZ 13) and was divided into 4 mapping units for soil and land resource management. The Upazila consist of 1 Pourashova, 9 Union and 57 Mouza. Per capita land availability is about 0.23 ha. Medium high land dominates (72%) the landscape. Clay loam and clay soils are major covering 36.1% and 32.5% of the upazila. Ramgati, Jhalakati, Barisal are the soil groups identified. Water recedes in normal time, early and very early from 55.7%, 16.2% and 0.8% of the area, respectively. Poorly drained soils predominate (72%) in the area. T.Aman is the dominant crop. Five major cropping patterns are recorded in the Upazila. Soils are in general deficient in N, P.

Objectives:

1.To update soil and land resource inventory of Kalapara Upazila.

2. To assess soil fertility and fertilizer recommendation.

Methodology:

A draft soil and landform map was prepared by analyzing aerial photos of Kalapara Upazila. Kalapar Upazila lying in the Ganges Tidal Floodplain (AEZ 13) has been divided into 4 mapping units depending on landform, land type and soils. Semi-detailed soil survey was carried out by traversing at regular interval for ground truthing. Soils was checked across the catena by opening mini pit. Land use and management data were recorded by interviewing the farmers at each checking point. Top soil composite samples were collected @ one sample per 200 hectares of land covering each landform, land type and soils. Soil and land form map was finalized by incorporating changed features. Soil samples were analyzed in the laboratory and soils were classified according to fertility status. Updated soil and land resources utilization guide was prepared by compiling analytical physical and chemical data. The work was strated on 05-05-2009 and ended on 12-12-2010.

Achievement/Findings:

Ramgati (loam), Jhalakati (clay laom), Barisal (clay) are the soil groups identified covering 1,167ha, 17,034ha and 15,327ha respectively. Miscellaneous soil types Ganges silty alluvium occupies 377 ha.Water recedes in normal time, early and very early from 55.7%, 16.2% and 0.8% of the area, respectively. Poorly drained soils predominate (72%) in the area. T.Aman is the dominant crop. Five major cropping patterns i.e. Fallow-T.Aus (modern)- T.Aman (modern); Rabi crops-fallow- T.Aman (modern); Rabi crops- T.Aus (modern)-T.Aman (modern); Fallow-Fallow-T.Aman; Forest are recorded in the Upazila. Fallow-Fallow-T.Aman cropping patterns covers 43.2% of the cultivable area. Soils are in general deficient in N, P. Soil and water salinity is the main constraint in dry season.There is scope to popularize homestead gardening.
