The fungicidal management strategies for Cercospora leaf spot (Cercospora cruenta) and Powdery mildew (Erysiphe polygoni) of blackgram (Vigna mungo cv. Binamash-1) were developed through field experiments conducted during 1998-1999 and 1999-2000 cropping seasons. All the foliar fungicides, Bavistin 50WP, Dithane M-45, Indofil M-45, Ridomil MZ-72, Knowin 50WP and Thiovit consistently reduced the incidence and severities of both the diseases and increased seed yield. Among these foliar fungicides, Bavistin 50WP (Carbendazim) was the best one for the economic management of both the diseases and gave the highest seed yield followed by Knowin. The benefit cost ratio (BCR) was highest for Bavistin followed by Knowin.

To assess some foliar fungicides against Cercospora leaf spot and powdery mildew in order to develop cost-effective management strategy to increase grain yield and seed quality in blackgram under farmer’s condition in Bangladesh

The experiments were conducted for two consecutive years (1998-1999 and 1999-2000) during kharif season at the Bangladesh Institute of Nuclear Agriculture (BINA) farm Mymensingh (AEZ 9) and BINA sub-station farm Ishurdi, Pabna (AEZ 11) under natural conditions.  The experiments were laid out in randomized complete block design with three replications. The unit plot size was 3m x 3m each.  The seeds of the high yielding mutant variety of blackgram ‘Binamash-1’ were sown in rows on last week of September in both the years. Row to row and plant to plant spacings were maintained at 30 cm and 5-7 cm, respectively. The recommended doses of fertilizers were applied and recommended cultural practices were followed (Anonymous, 1998). The fungicides Bavistin 50WP (Carbendazim) (@ 0.1%), Indofil M-45 (Mancozeb) (@ 0.2%), Knowin 50 WP (Carbendazim) (@ 0.1%) and Thiovit (Sulphur) (@ 0.4%), Dithane M-45 (Mancozeb) (@ 0.4%) and Ridomil MZ-72 (Mancozeb + Metalyxyl) (@ 0.2%) were applied thrice starting from the initiation of the disease in the field at 10-day intervals. A control treatment was maintained by spraying water only. The plants were assessed at 10 days after final spray. The incidence of each disease was recorded by considering all the plants per plot for each treatment and expressed as per cent infected plants. The disease severity was recorded following standard scale (0-9) described by Jalaluddin (1984) and the data were converted into per cent disease index (PDI) value according to Rahman and Nahar (1990). After harvest, data on the number of pods per plant, seeds per pod and seed yield were recorded. Seeds obtained from each plot was converted into seed yield (kg ha-1) for statistical analysis. The benefit cost ratio (BCR) was calculated according to Rahman (1998), considering the price of Blackgram @ Tk. 22 kg-1; Bavistin 50WP @ Tk. 110.00 per 100g; Dithane M-45 @ Tk. 478.00 per kg; Indofil @ Tk. 445.00 per kg; Knowin @ Tk. 110.00 per 100g; Ridomil @ Tk. 800.00 per kg; Thiovit @ Tk. 116.00 per kg and the labour cost of  spray @ Tk. 75 day-1.
