Effect of Garlic Extract Against Root-knot of Brinjal

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

The water extract of garlic (Allium sativam) was found to be effective to control root-knot nematode (Meloidogyne javanica) of brinjal (Solanum melongena). No root gall was observed when the extract was incorporated to soil at 50% dilution or higher concentration. Satisfactory reduction of root galls was achieved even at the lowest concentration in which the extract was diluted 100 times. The material caused significant increase in root and shoot growth.

Objectives:

To identify the effect of garlic to control of root-knot of Brinjal.

Methodology:

The prepare the extract 25 g of garlic bulb was macerated in a blender, soaked in 100 ml distilled water, centrifuged and filtered through filter paper. The filtrate was designated as standard suspension(s). The extract was diluted twice, 10 and 100 times in distilled water and the diluted extract was designated as S/2, S/10 and S/100 respectively. One month old brinjal seedlings (cv. Singnath) grown in sterilized soil were transplanted in earthen pots containing 4 kg formalin treated soil. Each pot received one uniformly vigour seedling. Five days after transplanting the seedling were inoculated with second stage infective larvae of M. Javanica at 1000 larvae per plant. The larvae were suspended in 2 ml distilled water and injected near the base of each seedling. The extracts of garlic were incorporated with soil 8 times beginning from 10 days after transplanting with 10 days interval. In control treatment only distilled water was incorporated with soil. There were 5 treatments and each of them was represented by 4 pots. The pots arranged in the glass house following completely randomized design. Plants were allowed to grow for 90 days providing necessary irrigation. At the end of the growing period the plants were uprooted and gall number per gram roots and length and fresh weight of root and shoot were recorded.

Achievement/Findings:

Garlic extract of the highest concentration (s) and S/2 caused complete suppression of galls. S/10 concentration was also superior to S/100 in respect of reduction of root galls.
