Effect of Containers on Viability of Lentil Seeds During Short Storage at Room Temperature

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

Effect of storage containers on the viability of lentil was studied in Seed Pathology Center, Bangladesh Agricultural University, Mymensingh. Seeds were stored in tin container, polythene bag and gunny bag during 20, 40 and 60 days of storage. Among the three containers, the highest germination, plant growth and seedling vigour were found in polythene bag. The viability of seeds decreased with increase of storage period. Four fungal genera viz. Fusarium sp. Aspergillus sp. Macrophomina sp. and Penicillium sp.were found to be associated with the samples after 60 days of storing. The lowest fungi were recorded in tin container followed by polythene bag. The result indicating that the tin container may be used for storing lentil seeds for short duration.

Objectives:

To evaluate the effect of containers on viability of lentil seeds during storing.

Methodology:

An experiment was conducted in Bangladesh Agricultural University, Mymensingh following CRD with four replications. Lentil seeds were stored for 20, 40 and 60 days. Germination test use done in plastic tray and data on normal seedling, abnormal seedling, ungerminated seeds, shoot length and root length were recorded. Seed health test was carried out following blotter method to the seed borne fungi associated with the seed samples (ISTA, 1996)
