Effect of Direct Seeding and Transplanting on Yield and Yield Contributing Characters of BINAdhan-14 (oryza Sativa L.)

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

To find out the suitable planting methods on the yield and yield attributes of late boro rice, an experiment was conducted at farms of Bangladesh Institute of Nuclear Agriculture (BINA), during boro season 2014-15. Three different sowing methods viz., direct seeding with sprouting seed & without sprouting seed and transplanting were practiced. Binadhan-14 was evaluated along with one check BRRI dhan28. Binadhan-14 was late transplanting high yield potential short duration rice released in 2013. In varietal study, Binadhan-14 showed higher grain yield than BRRI dhan28. Comparative effect of transplanting method in late boro season showed that highest grain yield was produced in transplanting method and the second highest yield was produced in direct seeding with sprouting seed method. Transplanting is laborious and costly method. Direct seeding was seven days earlier than transplanted rice. However, considering crop duration direct seeding with sprouting seed will be effective by sacrificing grain yield

Objectives:

The objective of the study was to evaluate the effect of planting methods on the yield and yield contributing characters of late boro rice varieties.

Methodology:

An experiment was laid to find out the yield potentiality of Binadhan-14 in direct seeding and transplanting method. The experiment was conducted at BINA HQ, Mymensingh and Sub-station, Rangpur. Binadhan-14 was evaluated along with one check variety: BRRI dhan28 during late boro season 2014-15. Three different sowing methods viz., transplanting, direct seeding without sprouting & direct seeding with sprouting seed were applied at the experimental sites. The unit plot size was 3 m × 2 m. Thirty days old seedlings were transplanted @ 2-3 seedlings hill^-1 with a planting spacing of 20 cm x 15 cm. The plots were fertilized with 105, 15, 60, 15 and1.5 kg ha^-1 of N, P, K, S, Zn as urea, Triple Super Phosphate (TSP), Murate of Potash (MoP), gypsum and zinc oxide, respectively. All the fertilizers except urea were applied at final land preparation in full amount. Urea was applied in three splits 30% at 7-10 days after transplanting (DAT), 30% at 20-30 DAT and the last 40% at panicle initiation stage. The crop was harvested at different dates at maturity. The experiment was laid out in a RCB design with three replications. Data on yield and yield components were recorded at harvest and were statistically analyzed following the design used for the experiment and the means were compared with LSD.

Achievement/Findings:

Comparative effect of transplanting method in late boro season 2015-14 was studied in BINA farm. Binadhan-14 showed the maximum grain yield. Transplanting methods showed maximum grain yield in most cased except crop duration. It is laborious and costly method. Whereas direct seeding with sprouting seed methods is substituted. The association of grain yield and crop duration indicates that the direct seeding system would be applicable considering labour cost. Farther study is required to conclude the most effective method of cultivation for Binadhan-14 with other agronomical management practices.
