Determination of Optimum Time and Row Spacing for Growth and Yield of Lentil Lines

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

At Ishurdi results showed that the mean seed yield was highest (2.25 t ha^-1) in November 1 sowing contributed by higher number of pods plant^-1and branches plant^-1. Among advance lines, LM-75-4 produced highest seed yield (2.33 t ha^-1) and second highest seed yield (2.27 t ha^-1) was produced by LM-132-7.The lowest seed yield was obtained by Binamasur-5 (2.01 t ha^-1). In closer spacing (20 cm row), yielded higher (2.43 t ha^-1) than 25 cm and 30 cm row spacing. The interaction results of time x variety x spacing revealed that the yield of mutant line LM-132-7 was the highest (2.67 t ha^-1) at 20 cm spacing in November 1 sowing. On the other hand, at Magura results showed that the mean seed yield was highest (2.14 t ha^-1) in November 1 sowing contributed by higher number of Populations/m², pods plant^-1and branches plant^-1. Among advance lines, LM-75-4 produced highest seed yield (2.20 t ha^-1) and LM-132-7 produced second highest (2.15 t ha^-1). The lowest seed yield was obtained by Binamasur-5 (2.03 t ha^-1). In closer spacing (20 cm row), yield was higher (2.35 t ha^-1) than 25 cm and 30 cm row spacing. The interaction results of time x variety x spacing revealed that the yield of LM-132-7 was the highest (2.46 t ha^-1) at 20 cm spacing in November 1 sowing.

Objectives:

To find out proper time and optimum spacing for maximizing yield of lentil mutants

Methodology:

The experiment was conducted in the sub-station farm at Ishurdi and Magura during 2014-15 to evaluate the effect of sowing time (November 01 and November 15) and row spacing’s (20 cm, 25 cm, and 30 cm) on the yield and yield contributing characters of three advanced lentil lines/variety viz. LM-75-4, LM-132-7 along with one check variety, Binamosur-5. The experiment was laid out in RCB design with 3 replications. The unit plot size was 4 m × 3 m. The recommended doses of fertilizers were applied. The experiment was harvested on different dates according to the maturity of the mutant lines/varieties. The data on yield and yield attributes were recorded from randomly selected 10 plants while the yield data were recorded from the harvest of whole plot. All the recorded data were statistically analyzed using MSTAT Statistical computer program according to the design used for the experiment. Least significant difference (LSD) was used to compare variations among treatments.

Achievement/Findings:

The trial of sowing time and spacing of lentil mutants revealed that the yield of mutant line, LM-132-7 was higher (2.67 t ha^-1at Ishurdi and 2.46 t ha^-1at Magura) in November 1 sowing with 20 cm row spacing.
