Determination of Optimum Spacing on the Growth and Yield of Sesame Mutants

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

Results indicated that highest seed yield was obtained by Binatil-3 (1.40 t ha-1) and second highest (1.36 t ha-1) by mutant line SM-9. Other two mutant SM-8 and SM-067 produced similar seed yield (1.30 t ha-1). Among row spacing’s highest seed yield was produced (1.46 t ha-1) at 20 cm row because of higher number of population’s, capsule plant-1 and length capsule-1. With the increasing of row spacing, seed yield was decreased. Interaction of varieties and spacing showed that all the mutants/variety produced higher seed yield at 20 cm row spacing.

Objectives:

To find out proper spacing for maximizing yield of sesame mutants

Methodology:

The experiment was conducted at BINA Substation Magura to evaluate the effect of row spacing’s (20 cm, 25 cm, and 30 cm) on the yield and yield contributing characters of four sesame mutants variety viz. SM-8, SM-9, SM-067 along with one check variety, Binatil-3. The experiment was conducted in a split-plot design with 3 replications. The variety was placed in the main plot and spacing’s in sub plot. The recommended doses of fertilizers were applied. The data on yield attributes were recorded from randomly selected 10 plants while yield data were recorded from whole plots. All the data were analyzed statistically using MSTAT programme of computer and the mean values were judged by LSD

Achievement/Findings:

Results of sesame mutants with different spacing showed that the released variety, Binatil-3 produced higher seed yield (1.48 t ha^-1) at 20 cm row spacing .The mutant lines; SM-9, SM-067, SM-8 performed better in respect of yield (1.48, 1.47, 1.45 and 1.43 t ha^-1, respectively).
