Effect of Antibiotics and BAU-biofungicide in Controlling Bacterial Leaf Blight of Litchi

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

The experiment was carried out in the net house, Department of Plant Pathology, Bangladesh Agricultural University, Mymensingh, Bangladesh during 16 July 2012 to June 2013 to find out the suitable management practices for controlling bacterial leaf blight of litchi by applying six treatments viz. i) T₁=Gentamycin @ 0.05%, ii) T₂=Erithromycin @ 0.05%, iii) T₃=Doxycycline @ 0.05%, iv) T₄=Copper sulphate @ 0.05%, v) T₅=BAU-Biofungicide @ 2% and vi) T₆=Control. Percent incidence and percent severity has been found to decrease by applying BAU-Biofungicide, Copper sulphate, and gentamycin, although other treatments showed good result in decreasing severity of bacterial leaf blight. BAU-Biofungicide was found superior among the treatments as it increased 18.83% plant height, 43.50% branch over control and reduced 17.16% disease incidence and 63.03% disease severity over control when applied as foliar spray @ 2%. Copper sulphate reduced 13.85% disease incidence and 50.21% disease severity over control and graded second best control measure for bacterial leaf blight of litchi when applied as foliar spray @ 0.05%.

Objectives:

To evaluate some antibiotics and biofungicide for controlling bacterial leaf blight of litchi

Methodology:

The experiment was carried out in the net house, Department of Plant Pathology, Bangladesh Agricultural University, Mymensingh, Bangladesh during July 2012 to June 2013. Litchi (Variety: China-3) seedlings were collected from Vai-Vai nursery, Shamvuganj, Sadar upazila, Mymensingh on 16 July 2012. The collected seedlings were found to infection with Bacterial Leaf Blight disease. The soil of pot prepared by mixing 50% cowdung, 50% soil and with inorganic fertilizer (Urea, Mop). Soils were prepared 10 days prior to transplanting. On 12 August these litchi seedlings were transplanted. For the control of Bacterial Leaf Blight (BLB), six different treatments were employed as foliar spray. The experiment was laid out in Completely Randomized Design (CRD) with three replications. The treatments were: T₁= Gentamycin (0.05%), T₄= Copper sulphate (0.05%), T₂= Erithromycin (0.05%), T₅= BAU-Biofoungicide (2%), T₃= Doxycycline (0.05%), T₆= Untreated control. For the preparation 0.05% spray solution of Gentamycin, Erithromycin, Doxycycline and Copper sulphate. 0.5 g of each chemical was dissolved in 1000 ml of water to make 0.05% of spray solution. For making 2% spray solution of BAU-Biofungicide, 20 gm of BAU-Biofungicide were dissolved in 1000 ml of water to make the spray solution 2%. The following data were collected: Height of the seedlings, Number of branch, Number of leaves, Disease incidence and diseased severity. Disease incidence and severity were calculated following Galanihe et al., 2004.
