Effect of Different Levels of Sulphur on Some Metabolic Activities and Seed Yield of Blackgram.

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

Pot culture experiments were conducted to evaluate the effect of different levels of sulphur on some metabolic activities and seed yield of blackgram genotypes. The sulphur levels were: 0, 10, 20 and 40 kg/ha along with a standard dose of nitrogen (30 kg/ha) in each treatment. Four genotypes viz., M-25, B-10, M-25 and B-10-50 were taken as test crop. Metabolic activity of blackgram apparently maintained a dose response relationship with sulphur control. Chlorophyll, soluble protein, reducing sugar content and nitrate reductase activities increased with the incraese in sulphur in rooting media of blackgram genotypes. Accumulation of 35S as well as nitrogen in the root, shoot and seeds of each genotypes increased with increase in amount of sulphur. The metabolic activities and nitrogen uptake in blackgram genotypes to sulphur doses was higher in 20 and 40 kg/ha.

Objectives:

To evaluate the effect of different levels of sulphur on some metabolic activities and nutrient uptake of blackgram.

Methodology:

Sand culture experiments were conducted at the pot yard of bangladesh Institute of Nuclear Agriculture, Mymensingh, under different levels of sulphur with four blackgram genotypes. The sulphur levels were: 0, 10, 20 and 40 kg/ha along with a standard dose of nitrogen (30 kg/ha) in each treatment. Four genotypes viz., M-25, B-10, M-25 and B-10-50 were taken as test crop. Modified Letcombe Nutrient Solution was used in this experiment. Earthen pots lined with polythene sheet were filled with 10 kg purified and sundried sand. The prepared nutrient solution was applied in each pot as per treatment at weekly interval. For hydrophonic culture, the germinated seeds were transferred to plastic pots filled with 0.1 N Letcombe Nutrient Solution (Hewitt, 1966). The nutrient solution was aerated by air pumps. The nutrient solution was replaced by fresh one at weekly interval. Nitrate reductase, chlorophyll content in leaves, reducing sugar, soluble protein were determined. In another experiment, seedlings were transferred to K¹⁵NO3 rich solution containing no sulphur, 10, 20 and 40 kg S/ha. Shoot samples were collected after 48 hours of 15N application. In other experiment, 1000 ml of freshly prepared 0.1 N Letcombe solution containing different grades of ³⁵S was taken in different pots. Fifteen days old seedlings were grown 0, 0.15, 0.30 and 0.6 ml solution corresponding to 0, 10, 20 and 40 kg S/ha were placed in respective pots. Samples were collected after 48 hours of 35S application. ¹⁵N and ³⁵S were determined from plant samples.
