Evaluation of Chickpea Genotypes in Respect of Sulphur and Boron Availability

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

An experiment was carried out to study the effect of different levels of S and B on some morphological characters and biochemical activities in chickpea genotypes viz., Binasola-3, Binasola-4 and CPM-834. Plants were grown in sand using nutrient solution in the pot. The experiment comprised three levels of sulphur and boron viz., 0, 20 and 40 kg S/ha and 0, 0.5 and 1 kg B/ha. Number of branches and pods, leaf area and seed yield/plant, nitrate reductase activity, accumulation of N, P, K and Zn increased with increase in S and B levels. But effect of 20 and 40 kg S/ha along with 1 kg B/ha had statistically similar and maximum effect on plants growth and development thereby seed yield.

Objectives:

To study the effect of different levels of S and B on some morphological characters and biochemical activity in chickpea.

Methodology:

Pot experiment was conducted at pot yard, Bangladesh Institute of Nuclear Agriculture, Mymensingh, during the period from November 2003 to March 2004. Chickpea varieties viz., Binasola-3, Binasola-4 and CPM-834 were taken as test crop. Recommended doses of Urea, TSP, MP and Zn were mixed with soil. Sulphur treatments were made during final soil preparation at the rate of 0, 20 and 40 Kg/ha. Boron treatments were made during final soil preparation at the rate of 0, 0.5 and 1.0 kg/ha. Ontogenetic nitrate reductase activity was determined at 10 days interval starting from 20 DAS to 70 DAS. At harvest, TDM production, yield components and seed yield were recorded. The collected data were analyzed statistically.

Achievement/Findings:

20 kg S and 1 kg B/ha had good performance in nitrate reductase activity as well as TDM production thereby showed maximum yield potential in chickpea.
