Evaluation of Mustard Genotypes in Respect of Sulphur and Boron Availability

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

An experiment was carried out to study the effect of different levels of S and B on some biochemical activities and nutrients uptake in mustard genotypes viz., Safal, Binasarisa-4 and Binasarisa-5. Plants were grown in sand using nutrient solution in the pot. The experiment comprised three levels of sulphur and boron viz., 0, 20 and 40 kg S/ha and 0, 0.5 and 1 kg B/ha. Number of branches and pods, leaf area and seed yield/plant, nitrate reductase activity, accumulation of N, P, K and Zn increased with increase in S and B levels. The variety Safal had higher nitrate reductase activity, amino acid and reducing sugar accumulation than the other two varieties. Performance of tested genotypes were better at 40 kg S/ha. Safal had sown better performance to 0.5 kg B/ha while Binasarisa-4 and Binasarisa-5 performed well at 1 kg B/ha.

Objectives:

To study the effect of different levels of S and B on some biochemical activity and uptake and accumulation of some cations and anions in mustard.

Methodology:

Pot experiment was conducted at pot yard, Bangladesh Institute of Nuclear Agriculture, Mymensingh, during the period from November 2002 to March 2003. Mustard varieties viz., Safal, Binasarisa-4 and Binasarisa-5 were taken as test crop. Plants were grown in sand in pots using nutrient solution under ambient air. Sulphur fertilization from MgSO₄.7H₂O at the rate of 0, 20 and 40 Kg/ha. Boron fertilization from H₃BO₃ at the rate of 0, 0.5 and 1.0 kg/ha. Earthen pots lined with celophen bags were filled with 10 kg purified and sundried sand. After 7 days of emergence, three uniform and healthy seedlings were kept in each pot. Nutrient solution was applied in each pot as per treatment combination at weekly interval. Biochemical analysis such as nitrate reductase activity, chlorophyll, soluble protein, reducing sugar were done. At harvest, TDM production, nutrients uptake, yield components and seed yield were recorded. The collected data were analyzed statistically.

Achievement/Findings:

40 kg S and 1 kg B/ha had good performance in nitrate reductase activity as well as nutrient uptake thereby showed maximum TDM production and yield potential in mustard.
