Management of Alternaria Leaf Blight of Mustard with Healthy Seed, Insecticide and Fungicide

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

The management strategy of Alternaria blight (Alternaria brassicae) of mustard (Brassica spp. cv. Binasarisha-4) was developed using single or combined applications of Melathion (2ml l^-1), Rovral (2g l^-1) with healthy seeds. The experiments were conducted in randomized complete block design with three replications during 2001-2002 and 2002-2003 cropping seasons. All the treatments significantly reduced the severity of the disease and increased seed yield. However, the highest seed yield (1565 kg ha^-1) with least severity of Alternaria blight were recorded in plots where healthy seeds of mustard were sown and the foliar applications of Melathion and Rovral were made. The highest gross return was obtained from the plots where combined applications of Melathion, Rovral and the use of clean healthy seed of mustard were made.

Objectives:

To assess the single and combined effects of healthy seed, Melathion and Rovral on the severity of Alternaria blight and seed yield of mustard.

Methodology:

The effects of single and integrated use of the healthy seed and the foliar applications of Melathion (2ml l^-1) and Rovral (2g l^-1) were assessed in order to find out appropriate management strategy for Alternaria blight (Alternaria brassicae) of mustard/rapeseed cv. Binasorisha-4. The experiments were conducted in randomized block design with three replications at the BINA sub-station farm, Ishurdi during winter season of 2001-02 and 2002-03. The unit plot size was 5.0 m x 3.0 m and the seeds were sown in continuous rows with spacing of 20 cm apart. The fertilizers were applied at recommended doses (Anonymous, 2004). Seeds were cleaned and stored before sowing in order to obtained the healthy seeds. Intercultural operations were done when required. The plots were sprayed twice at 40 and 45 days after sowing with Melathion and Rovral and at the same time control plots were sprayed with water. The severity of Alternaria blight was assessed at 60 and 80 days after sprouting. The severity was recorded by counting the number of lesions per leaf and the per cent blighted areas on leaves. For estimation of leaf spot and leaf area blighted, 5 diseased leaves excluding older and younger ones were randomly selected from each of 10 selected plants from middle of the rows. Hundred siliqua were collected from 25 randomly selected plants of each plot taking 4 siliqua at middle of the main raceme of each plant for determining the average number of spots and yield contributing parameters. Data were analyzed statistically and treatment effects were compared only for 1000-seed weight and seed yield by using Duncan’s New Multiple Range Test. Gross economic return was calculated by considering mustard seed @ Tk. 15 kg^-1.

Achievement/Findings:

Considering gross margin, the integration of healthy seeds, spraying of Melathion and Rovral may be recommended for the management of Alternaria blight of mustard. But when considering the environment friendly management of the disease, sowing of healthy seeds was the best treatment in respect of economic yields and return.
