Study on Salinity Development in Soils Irrigated with Different Strength of Saline Water

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

The experiment was conducted in Salinity Management and Research Center, Soil Resource Development Institute, Batiaghata, Khulna to observe salinity development in soils irrigated with different strength of saline water. The experiment was conducted in RCBD with three replications. Twelve micro plots of size 1m x 1m x 1m were constructed with brick works. The micro plots were filled up with non-saline (1.2 dS/m) soils. Four strengths of saline water viz. 2, 4, 6 and 8 dS/m were used to irrigate the micro plots at 2-3 days interval to keep the soil saturated. Irrigation was started during the second week of February 2011 and soil samples were collected during the second week of June 2012. Soils were collected from three layers of each micro plot at 10, 30 and 75 cm depths and measured their salinity. The highest soil salinity (8.24 dS/m) was observed in treatment 4 (irrigated with 8 dS/m of saline water) at the depth of 10 cm and the lowest soil salinity (2.32 dS/m) was in treatment 1 (irrigated with 2 dS/m of saline water) at the depth of 75 cm. Soil salinity was found to decrease with the decrease of salinity of irrigation water and with the increase of depth of soil.

Achievement/Findings:

The data on soil salinity development due to irrigation with saline water is presented. The initial soil salinity of micro plot was 1.2 dS/m. The texture of the soil was silty clay. The highest soil salinity (8.24 dS/m) was observed in treatment 4 (irrigated with 8 dS/m of saline water) at the depth 10 cm and the lowest soil salinity (2.32 dS/m) was found in treatment 1 (irrigated with 2 dS/m of saline water) at the depth of 75 cm. Soil salinity was round to decrease with the decrease of salinity of irrigation water and with the increase of the depth of soil. This may be due to accumulation of more salt at the upper soil layers during percolation of the saline water through soils.
