Tillage Practices for Wheat Cultivation in the Terrrace Soils of Bangladesh

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

The major limiting factors for winter crop production in the heavy textured terrace soils (Aeric Albaquept) are high mechanical impedance dur to plough pan, low water intake capacity, quick depletion of surface soil water and scanty rainfall during winter season. Experiments conducted on tillage practices such as minimum, conventional and deep tillage to 15, 20 and 30 cm depths with or without irrigation showed variable effects on some soil physical properties and crop yield. The amount of water infiltrated into the soil within 400 minutes increased with the increase in tillage depths. Initial infiltration rates were higher with increased depths of tillage operations which reduced considerably at the end of study period. Loosening of plough pan by increasing the depths of cultivation resulted into lower penetration resistance and bulk density. As a result, water retention capacity increased. Wheat yield significantly increased due to deep tillage - the highest being recorded with 20 cm tillage depths. The extent of increase in wheat yield was greater under irrigated conditions. The water depletion of surface soil was more pronounced on the non-irrigated plots and the soil water content went down to almost wilting point. Deep tillage created a favorable soil physical environment for deeper rooting and utilization of sub-soil water and nutrients. This resulted into increased yield and water use efficiency of wheat crop.

Objectives:

To know the influence of irrigation regimes and tillage practices on some physical properties in relation to wheat cultivation in the Terrace soils of Bangladesh

Methodology:

Experiments in split-plot design were followed using treatments irrigation regimes and tillage practices. The irrigation regimes were: I₀ - no irrigation, I₁- one irrigation of 5 cm at 4 weeks after sowing. The tillage practices include: T₁ - minimum tillage by opening a furrow using country plough, T₂ - conventional tillage to a depth of 7-8 cm using country plough, T₃ - deep tillage to a depth of 15 cm, T₄ - deep tillage to a depth of 20-22 cm and T₅ - deep tillage to a depth of 30 cm. Land was prepared manually using spade for the deep tillage treatments. The plot size was 5 m x 4 m. Wheat seeds (Triticum aestivum L.cv-Kanchan) were sown in lines with 20 cm apart. Fertilizers were applied @ 90 kg N, 35 kg P, 50 kg K, 20 kg S and 3 kg Zn, ha^-1 as urea, TSP, MP, Gypsum and Zinc Sulphate, respectively.

Achievement/Findings:

Deep tillage has significant influence on the changes in bulk density and penetration resistance which contributed to changes in porosity, water retention and water transmission properties. The improved physical environment resulted into increase in yield potentials of wheat in the terrace soils of Bangladesh with reduced supplemental irrigation and sustained productivity through persistent of loosened layers to some extent resulting into better water and nutrient availability for the next crop.
