Influence of Types and Concentrations of Abt Rooting Powder on Dry Matter Production of Rice.

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

The experiment was conducted to evaluate the effectiveness of four types of ABT rooting powders (ABT-3, ABT-4, ABT-6 and ABT-7) and their doses (0, 20, 40 and 60 ppm) on root and shoot growth and their consequence on yield of rice under sub-tropical environment condition. The widely cultivated rice variety BRRI dhan28 was used as test crop. Results indicated that root and straw weight and grain yield were significantly influenced by ABT rooting powder and their doses. Among the four types of ABT rooting powders, ABT-4 and ABT-7 performed better root and shoot dry mass production thereby yield as compared to ABT-3 and ABT-6. The results further indicated that the response of ABT rooting powders to same concentration is not similar in achieving higher grain yield in rice. However, though 40 ppm concentration showed higher grain yield in most of ABT rooting powders but had non-significant differences in grain yield with 20 and 60 ppm concentrations. Therefore, concentrations of 20-40 ppm of ABT rooting powder may be advisable to use as rooting powder for increase grain yield of rice. Among the rooting powders, ABT-4 and ABT-7 were the best for increase rice production under sub-tropical condition.

Objectives:

To assess the effectiveness of four types of ABT rooting powders and their three doses on dry matter production and yield of rice under sub-tropical condition.

Methodology:

The experiment was conducted at the experimental field of Bangladesh Institute of Nuclear Agriculture, Mymensingh, Bangladesh from December 2005 to May 2006. Four types of ABT rooting powder viz., ABT-3, 4, 6 and 7 with three doses each (20, 40 and 60 ppm) were used in the study. The experiment was laid out in a randomized complete block design with four replicates. The unit plot size was 2m × 3m. Recommended fertilizer doses were used. The popular rice cultivar BRRI dhan-28 was used as planting material. For preparation of stock solutions of ABT-3 & 4, 0.1 g powder was completely dissolved in 50 ml of 95% ethanol and then distilled water was added to make the volume one liter. This solution gave the concentration of 100 ppm. From this 100 ppm solution, different concentrations of ABT-3 & 4 i.e. 20, 40 and 60 ppm solutions were prepared by diluting the solution. In case of stock solutions for ABT-6 & 7, distilled water was used to dissolve the same amount of powder. According to treatments, seeds were soaked in ABT solutions for 24 hours. Distilled water was used to sock for similar duration treated as control. After soaking seeds were sown in the seedbed. Thirty five-day old seedlings were transplanted in plot with a spacing of 20 cm × 20 cm on January 10, 2013. Two healthy seedlings hill^-1 were transplanted. Four sampling were done at 35, 65, 95 and 115 days after transplanting (DAT). Five random hills from each plot were up-rooted and plant parts such as root, stem and leaf were separated. At harvest, yield contributing characters and yield were recorded from 10 sample hills from each plot. In each plot, 1.5 m × 2.0 m was harvested and converted into tons per hectare. The collected data were analyzed statistically.

Achievement/Findings:

ABT rooting powders and their doses increase root and shoot weight thereby increase grain yield in rice. Concentration of 20-40 ppm of ABT rooting powder may be optimum dose for increase grain yield of rice cv. BRRI dhan28. Among the rooting powder, ABT-4 and 7 were the best for increase rice production under sub-tropical condition.
