Grain Sterility in Relation to Dry Mass Production and Distribution in Rice

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

Result showed that main tiller produced highest dry mass plant^-1 followed by primary, secondary and tertiary tillers. Production of filled grains plant^-1 was the highest in main tiller followed by primary, secondary and tertiary tillers. Results further indicated that number of filled grains plant^-1 decreased with increasing tillering position of primary, secondary and tertiary tillers. Those genotypes which produced greater number of grains plant^-1, also showed higher unfilled grains panicle^-1. Considering percent unfilled grains over total grains, result indicated that number of unfilled grains increased with increasing tiller position of primary, secondary and tertiary tillers. The highest proportion of unfilled grains was observed in tertiary tillers followed by secondary and primary tillers in all genotypes. Harvest index did not significantly reduce by tillering position until primary tiller-5 and thereafter HI significantly reduced in all genotypes. Considering tiller type, the HI rank was: Main tiller > primary tillers >secondary tillers > Tertiary tillers. The highest grain weight was recorded in main tiller followed by primary tiller-1 and so on. However, grain weight did not significantly reduce until primary tiller-3 and secondary tiller-2. Among the tiller type, the higher grain yield plant^-1 was observed in primary branch followed by secondary and tertiary branch.

Objectives:

The objective of this study was to investigate the potential causes of grain sterility by examining the source-sink relations in rice genotypes. Finding from this study would indicate a possible direction for rice breeding programme aiming at improving the quality of rice crop.

Methodology:

The experiment was conducted at BINA HQs farm during Boro season of 2014-15 to assess grain sterility in relation to dry mass production and distribution in rice. Two advanced mutants [RM-40 (C)-1-1-10 and RM-200 (C)-1-1-10] and three varieties (Binadhan-5, Binadhan-14 and BRRI dhan29) were taken as tested planting material. The experiment was conducted in randomized complete block design with three replicates. The unit plot size was 3m × 3 m with plant spacing 20 cm × 15 cm. The recommended doses of fertilizers were applied and other cultural practices were followed for normal plant growth and development. For growth study, dry mass production both at booting stage and at harvest was taken from five randomly selected hills of each plot. Then the selected hills were separated to main, primary, secondary and tertiary tillers and oven dried at 80 ⁰C for 72 hours. At harvest, 10 hills/plot uprooted and separated to main tiller, primary, secondary and tertiary tillers, and grain yield and yield related parameters of each tiller (consider as plant) was recorded. The collected data were analyzed statistically.

Achievement/Findings:

Efficient and higher dry matter allocation per spikelet is more important than increase total dry matter production to reduce grain sterility in rice. Grain sterility is mainly due to low translocation rate from source to sink, rather than limited biomass production or source limitation. Therefore, it is possible to improve grain filling of indica rice by selecting suitable parents.
