Effect of Frequency of Urea Foliar Application on Morphological Characters and Yield of Soybean

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

Field experiment was conducted to investigate the effect of foliar application of nitrogen on yield of soybean cv. Shohag. The experiment comprised five levels of foliar application of nitrogen: i) T₁ = Control; ii) T₂ = Foliar application of urea at the rate of 1.5% one time at the begging of flowering; iii) T₃ = Foliar application of urea at the rate of 1.5% two times from flowering start with an interval of 7 days; iv) T₄ = Foliar application of urea at the rate of 1.5% three times from flowering start with an interval of 7 days; and v) T₅= Foliar application of urea at the rate of 1.5% four times from flowers start to pod development stage with an interval of 7 days. Results showed that morphological, physiological, yield attributes and yield were increased in foliar nutrients applied plants over control but the increment was greater in T₄and T₅ than the others. The higher plant height, leaf area, total dry mass, absolute growth rate, chlorophyll content in leaf, harvest index, pod number and seed yield were recorded in T₄and T₅ with being the highest in T₅. The lowest yield was recorded in control plants.

Objectives:

To know the effect of foliar application of absolute urea (for nitrogen) on growth and yield in soybean; and to determine optimum frequency of urea foliar application for increased seed yield in soybean.

Methodology:

A field experiment was conducted at the Field Laboratory of Bangladesh Institute of Nuclear Agriculture, Mymensingh, during the period from December 2007 to April 2008 to investigate the effect of frequency urea foliar application on yield attributes and yield of soybean cv. Shohag. The experiment comprised five levels of nitrogen foliar application like i) T₁ = Control; ii) T₂ = Foliar application of urea at the rate of 1.5% one time at the begging of flowering; iii) T₃ = Foliar application of urea at the rate of 1.5% two times from flowering start with an interval of 7 days; iv) T₄ = Foliar application of urea at the rate of 1.5% three times from flowering start with an interval of 7 days and v) T₅= Foliar application of urea at the rate of 1.5% four times from flowers start to pod development stage with an interval of 7 days. The experiment was laid out in a Randomized Complete Block Design with three replications. The size of the unit plot was 2 m x 2 m. Plant to plant and row to row distance were maintained at 30 and 10 cm, respectively. The doses of fertilizers were 50, 150, 80, 70 and 5 kg ha^-1 for urea, TSP, MP, gypsum and borax, respectively. To study ontogenetic growth characteristics, a total of four harvests were made and at final harvest, data were collected on some morpho-physiological, yield attributes and yield. The first crop sampling was done at 75 DAS and continued at an interval of 10 days up to 105 DAS. From each plot, five plants were randomly selected and uprooted for obtaining data of necessary parameters. At harvest, yield and yield attributes were recorded. The collected data were analyzed statistically and means were adjudged by DMRT at 5% level of probability.

Achievement/Findings:

Foliar application of nitrogen had significant positive influence on plant characters, yield attributes and seed yield of soybean over control. The treatment T₅ (Foliar application of urea at the rate of 1.5% four times from flowers start to pod development stage with an interval of 7 days) performed the best in morphological, physiological, yield contributing characters which was similar to T₄ (Foliar application of urea at the rate of 1.5% three times from flowering start with an interval of 7 days); and hough T₅ and T₄ treatments performed similarity in vegetative and yield performance of soybean, we should practice T₄ treatment only for more economic benefit.
