Effect of Seed Size and Sowing Depth on Emergence and Yield of Groundnut

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

A pot experiment was conducted at BINA pot yard to find out the effect of seed size and sowing depth on seedling emergence and yield of groundnut cv. Binachinabadam-1. The treatments comprised of three sowing depth viz., 2, 4 and 6 cm. Seed size had no significant influence on emergence but depth of seed sowing had remarkable influence on it. The time required for 50% emergence increased with increasing sowing depth irrespective of seed size. Small seeds emerged faster than bold seeds. Plant vigor was greater in large seed than small seeds. The weight of pods increased significantly with increase sowing depth. 4 cm sowing depth produced the highest seed yield.

Methodology:

A pot experiment was conducted at BINA pot yard to find out the effect of seed size and sowing depth on seedling emergence and yield of groundnut cv. Binachinabadam-1 during November 2003 to May 2004. The treatments comprised of three sowing depth viz., 2, 4 and 6 cm. The seed size was small, medium and large. The experiment was arranged CRD with 4 replicates. Recommended fertilizers were applied as basal dose. Data on emergence and yield components were analyzed statistically.
