Management of Yellow Mosaic of Summer Mungbean with Boron, Molybdenum, Rogueing and Insecticide

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

An integrated management of yellow mosaic (YM) of mungbean (Vigna radiata (L.) (Wilczek cv. Binamoog-5) was carried out through foliar application of melathion at 2ml l^-¹, soil application of boron at 3 kg ha^-1 and molybdenum at 2 kg ha^-1 and rogueing diseased plants and their combined application during summer seasons of 2002 and 2003. All the treatments applied either single or in combination reduced the incidence and severity of yellow mosaic and increased seed yield. However, the highest seed yield of 1501 kg ha^-1 (44% over control), gross net return of Tk. 54054 ha^-1 and gross margin of Tk. 16632 ha^-1over control were recorded in plots where integrated applications of melathion, micronutrients (B and Mo) and rogueing of yellow mosaic affected plants were practiced.

Objectives:

To determine the effects of the micronutrients mainly boron and molybdenum, rogueing of diseased plants and the foliar application of insecticide individually and their combinations in order to develop integrated management strategy for yellow mosaic and to increase yield of summer mungbean.

Methodology:

The effects of single and combined applications of melathion 57EC (Two times @ 2ml l^-¹), micronutrients (boron and molybdenum) and rogueing of yellow mosaic infected plants at different stages of crop growth were determined in order to find out the suitable strategy for the management of yellow mosaic caused by MYMV for summer mungbean (cv. Binamoog-5). The experiments were conducted in randomized complete block design with three replications during two consecutive summer seasons of 2002 and 2003 at the farmer’s field at Rajabarihat, Rajshahi and BINA sub-station farm, Ishurdi, Pabna. The unit plot size was 5.0 m x 3.0 m and the seeds were sown in continuous rows. Row to row and seed to seed spacing were maintained 50 cm and 5-6 cm, respectively. The fertilizers were applied at recommended doses (Anonymous 1998). The micronutrient boron was applied @ 3kg ha^-1 as borax and the molybdenum was applied @ 2kg ha^-1as ammonium molybdate at the time of final land preparation. The plants of the treated plots were sprayed with melathion 57EC @ 2ml l^-1 twice at 40 and 52 days after sowing and at the same time the control plots were sprayed with water. Rogueing of yellow mosaic infected plants was made at 40 and 55 days after sowing. The incidence and severity of YM were assessed at 70 days after sowing. The severity (0-9 scale) was recorded according to the severity indices reported by Jalaluddin and Shaikh (1981). Plant height and yield components were recorded from ten randomly harvested from each plot. Seed weight obtained from each plot was converted into seed yield (kg ha^-1). Finally data were analyzed statistically using MSTAT programme.

Achievement/Findings:

Considering gross margin, the integration of melathion spray, soil application of boron and molybdenum and rogueing of diseased plants may be recommended for management of yellow mosaic of mungbean. But when considering the environment friendly management of the disease, soil application of micronutrient and rogueing of diseased plants is suitable.
