Evaluation of Planting Spacing on the Yield Performance of Some Advanced Soybean Lines

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

At Mymensingh, the mean seed yield due to planting spacing was the highest 2631 kg ha^-1 with 25 cm × 5~8 cm followed by spacing 30 cm × 5~8 cm and spacing 35 cm × 5~8 cm. The interaction results revealed that the released variety Sohagh produced the highest seed yield (2858 kg ha^-1) at a spacing of 25 cm × 5~8 cm. On the other hand, at Magura, the mean seed yield irrespective of different advanced lines/varieties was the highest 1242 kg ha^-1 with the spacing 25 cm × 5~8 cm which was statistically similar to 30 cm x 5~8 cm.

Objectives:

To evaluate the effect of spacing on the yield and yield contributing characters of soybean

Methodology:

The experiment was conducted at BINA HQ farm of Mymensingh and sub-station farm at Magura to evaluate the effect of planting spacing on the yield and yield contributing characters of three advanced soybean lines viz., BAU-S/21, BAU-S/70 and BAU-S/80 along with two check varieties, Sohagh and BARI soybean-5 with 3 different row spacing such as 25 cm × 5~8 cm, 30 cm × 5~8 cm and 35 cm × 5~8 cm. The experiment was laid out in split- plot design with 3 replications. The unit plot size was 3 m × 2 m both at Mymensingh and Magura. The advanced lines/varieties were placed in the main plots and planting spacing in the sub plot. The recommended doses of fertilizers were applied. The data on yield attributes were recorded from randomly selected 10 plants while yield data were recorded from the harvest of whole plot. All the recorded data were statistically analyzed using MSTAT Statistical Computer Package Program according to design used for the experiment and data of each location were separately analyzed. Least significant difference (LSD) was used to compare variations among treatments.

Achievement/Findings:

Three advanced soybean lines along with two check varieties were tested at Mymensingh and Magura locations. The check variety BARI soybean-5 produced the highest seed yield with the closer spacing of 25 cm × 5~8 cm at Mymensingh followed by Sohagh but at Magura the advanced line BAU-S/21 produced the highest yield with the same spacing.
