Effect of Gaba on Growth, Yield Attributes and Yield in Wheat

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

An experiment was conducted to investigate the effect of GABA on growth, yield attributes and yield of wheat variety cv. Kanchan. The experiment comprised of three levels of Miyodo viz., 2, 3 and 4 mg L^-1 and fresh water as control sprayed on wheat plant at 40 days after sowing. Results revealed that application of GABA increased plant height, tiller number hill^-1, leaf number as well as leaf area, total dry mass and crop growth rate over control being the highest in 2 mg L^-1 concentration. Further, GABA at 2 mg L^-1 showed the highest seed yield due to increased number of effective tillers hill^-1 and spikelets spike^-1 followed by 3 mg L^-1. In contrast, control plants produced the lowest grain yield due to performed inferior performance in yield attributes.

Objectives:

To study the effect of different concentrations of GABA on morphological, growth, yield attributes and yield in wheat; and to find out the optimum dose of GABA for getting higher yield in wheat.

Methodology:

The experiment was carried out at the Field Laboratory, Bangladesh Agricultural University, Mymensingh, during the period from 20 November 2005 to 24 April 2006. One popular variety of wheat namely, Kanchan was used in the present experiment. The plant growth regulator, GABA is commercial name and its composition is unknown. The concentrations of Miyodo were 2, 3 and 4 mg L^-1 with a control. The experiment was laid out in a Randomized Complete Block Design with 3 replications. The size of the unit plot was 2 m x 2 m. Plant to plant and row to row distances were maintained at 5 cm and 25 cm, respectively. The dose of fertilizers was: urea 200, TSP 150 and MP 65 kg ha^-1. The formulation of GABA was water-soluble powder. For preparation of GABA working solution: 2, 3 and 4 mg of GABA powder were added to one liter of water and spraying was done on wheat plants at afternoon by using a hand sprayer. To study ontogenetic growth characteristics, a total of four harvests were made and at final harvest, data were collected on some morpho-physiological, yield attributes and yield. The first crop sampling was done at 55 DAS and continued at an interval of 15 days up to 100 DAS. From each plot five plants were randomly selected and uprooted for obtaining data of necessary parameters. The plants were separated in to leaves, stems and roots and the corresponding dry weights were recorded after oven drying at 80 ± 2 ⁰C for 72 hours. The leaf area of each sample was measured by LICOR automatic leaf area meter. The growth analysis like AGR were carried out following the formulae of Hunt (1978). At harvest, yield and yield contributing characters were recorded. The collected data were analyzed statistically.

Achievement/Findings:

Foliar application of GABA at the low concentration of 2.0 mg L^-1 at vegetative stage on wheat had remarkable superiority for plant growth, yield components and yield over the other doses (3.0 and 4.0 mg L^-1). So, GABA with 2.0 mg L^-1 may be applied for increased grain yield of wheat. Further study with some lower concentrations are necessary to find out the optimum dose of Miyodo for getting higher yield in wheat.
