Determination of Spacing Requirement of Mustard/rape Seed Mutants for Maximizing Yield

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

At Ishurdi, the mean seed yield due to spacing was the highest (1147 kg ha^-1) with 20 cm × 5~8 cm followed by the spacing 25 cm × 5~8 cm and these three differed statistically from that of 15 cm × 5~8 cm. On the other hand, at Comilla, the mean seed yield due to spacing was the highest (1178 kg ha^-1) with 20 cm × 5~8 cm which was statistically similar to S3 and S4 but different from S1.

Objectives:

The objectives were to observe how the yield performances of these lines were affected by different spacing

Methodology:

Three mustard/rape seed mutants viz., MM-005, MM-025 and MM2-16-98 along with check variety Binasarisha-4 were grown under four spacing- 15 cm × 5~8 cm, 20 cm × 5~8 cm, 25 cm × 5~8 cm and 30 cm × 5~8 cm during Rabi season of 2008 at two locations. The locations were sub-station farms of BINA at Ishurdi and Comilla. The experiment was laid out in RCBD with three replications. The unit plot size was 3m x 2m. At maturity plant population count, yield and yield components were taken from the middle five lines of each plot. Data on yield components were recorded from randomly selected 10 plants from those of five lines. The data were analyzed location-wise as per design used for the experiment using MSTAT Statistical Computer Program. Means of the results were compared by LSD.

Achievement/Findings:

Three mustard/rape seed mutants along with a check variety were grown under four spacing during Rabi season of 2008 at Ishurdi and Comilla. The check variety Binasarisha-4 produced the highest yield at Ishurdi followed by MM-005 while MM-005 at Comilla produced the maximum seed yield followed by Binasarisha-4. Among the row spacing, 20 to 30 cm row to row spacing produced similar yields irrespective of mutant lines or variety.
