Effect of Gaba on Growth and Yield of Sesame

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

An experiment was conducted to investigate the effect of GABA (growth regulator) on growth, yield attributes and yield of sesame cv. BARI til-2. The experiment comprised of five levels of GABA viz., 2, 3, 4, 5 and 6 mgL^-1 and fresh water as control. GABA was sprayed on sesame plant at 30 and 40 days after sowing. Results revealed that GABA application increased plant height, leaf area, total dry mass, absolute growth rate and relative growth rate over control being the highest at 3 and 4 mg L^-1 concentrations. Further, GABA at 4 mg L^-1 showed the highest seed yield due to increased number of siliqua plant^-1 followed by 3 and 5 mg L^-1 with same statistical rank. In contrast, application of GABA @ 6 mg L^-1had the adverse effect on yield attributes and yield compared to 2-5 mg L^-1 indicating inhibitory effect of GABA at high concentration of 6 mg L^-1 on sesame.

Objectives:

To study the effect of GABA on growth, yield attributes and yield in sesame.

Methodology:

The experiment was carried out at the Field Laboratory, Bangladesh Agricultural University, Mymensingh, during the period from February to June 2007. The variety BARI til-2 was used as planting material. Four different concentrations of GABA (growth regulator) were used in the experiment. The concentrations of GABA were 2, 3, 4, 5 and 6 mg L^-1 along with a control. The spray was done at 30^th and 40^th days after sowing by a hand sprayer at afternoon. The experiment was laid out in a Randomized Complete Block Design with 3 replications. The size of the unit plot was 2.0 m x 2.0 m. The row to row distance was 25 cm. Total amount of TSP, MP, gypsum, borax and 50% of urea were applied as basal doses during final land preparation. The remaining 50% urea was applied as top dressing at 25 days after sowing (DAS) during flower initiation stage. The doses of fertilizers were: urea 125, TSP 150, MP 60 and gypsum 110 kg ha^-1. Recommended cultural practices were done for normal plant growth and development. To study ontogenetic growth characteristics, a total of five harvests were made and at final harvest, data were collected on some morpho-physiological, yield attributes and yield. The first crop sampling was done at 50 DAS and continued at an interval of 10 days up to 90 DAS i.e. till attaining physiological maturity. From each plot five plants were randomly selected and uprooted for obtaining data of necessary parameters. Achievement/Findings:

Foliar application of GABA enhance plant growth and development thereby increase seed yield in sesame. The maximum seed yield was recorded in 3 and 4 mg L^-1 concentrations. Therefore, it may be suggested for foliar application of GABA @ 3 or 4 mg L^-1 concentration on sesame for increase seed yield.
