Effect of Ga3 and Abt-8 on Growth and Yield of Onion

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

An experiment was conducted to investigate the effect of different doses of GA₃ and ABT-8 on morphological characters, growth and yield attributes of onion cv. Faridpuri. The experiment was comprised of three doses of GA₃ viz., 25, 50 and 100 ppm and three doses of ABT-8 viz., 10, 20 and 30 ppm. The spraying of GA₃ was done once at 30 days after transplanting of seedlings and the roots of seedlings were soaked with ABT for one hour before transplanting. Results revealed that both plant growth regulators had significant effect on growth and yield of onion. Foliar application of 100 ppm GA₃ produced the longest plant, highest leaf length and stem diameter resulting higher bulb yield. The seedling soaked with ABT-8 at 20 ppm solution produced the highest leaf number, root length, number of roots/plant and bulb yield. Therefore, 100 ppm GA₃ and 20 ppm ABT-8 could be applied for enhancing growth and yield of onion.

Objectives:

1.To study the effect of GA₃ and ABT-8 on growth, yield attributes and yield in onion

2. To find out effective dose (s) of GA₃ and ABT-8 for maximizing onion yield.

Methodology:

The experiment was conducted with onion cv. Faridpuri at the Field Laboratory of the Department of Crop Botany, Bangladesh Agricultural University, Mymensingh during the period from December 2004 to April 2005. The experiment was comprised of three doses of GA₃ viz., 25, 50 and 100 ppm and three doses of ABT-8 viz., 10, 20 and 30 ppm. The spraying of GA₃ was done once at 30 days after transplanting of seedlings and the roots of seedlings were soaked with ABT for one hour before transplanting. The experiment was laid out in a Randomized Complete Block Design where each treatment replicated thrice. The size of the unit plot was 2.0 m x 2 m. Plant to plant (15 cm) and row to row (20 cm) distances were maintained. The doses of manure and fertilizers were: cowdung 10,000, urea 260, TSP 200, MP 150 and gypsum 80 kg ha^-1. To study ontogenetic growth characteristics, a total of four harvests were made at 45, 60, 75 and 90 DAT. From each plot, five plants were selected from one side of the plot and uprooted for obtaining data of selected parameters. The plants were separated into leaves, pseudo-stems and roots and their corresponding dry weights were recorded after oven dry at 80^oC for 48 hours. The growth analysis was carried out following the formulae of Hunt (1978). Before harvesting the plots, 10 plants were randomly selected from each plot for collecting data on yield contributing characters. Data on plant characters and the collected data were analyzed statistically.
