Effect of Salinity on Growth and Photosynthetic Potential in Some Advanced Rice Lines

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

The highest plant height (95.10 cm) was found in BRRI dhan41 under 9 dSm^-1 levels of salinity and the lowest (78.30 cm) was in STM-2 at 12 dSm^-1 levels of salinity. However, the plant height of each advanced lines was reduced by the salinity stress compared to 9 dSm^-1 levels of salinity. The highest number of tillers/hill (23) was found in BRRI dhan41 under 9 dSm^-1 level of soil salinity and the lowest number of tillers/hill (7) was found in STM-2 and STM-1 (9) Under 12 dSm^-1 levels of salinity. The highest number of leaves/hill (100) was found in BRRI dhan41 under 9 dSm^-1 and the lowest numbers of leaves/hill (51) noted in STM-2 under 12 dSm^-1 level of salinity. The medium number of leaves/hill was obtained from STM-1 in medium level of salinity.The highest leaf area (4970 cm²) was found in BRRI dhan41 under 9dSm^-1 and the lowest (1127.10 cm²) in STM-2 from12 dSm^-1 level of soil salinity. TDM is an important growth index which reveled that every lines resulted in better growth i.e. higher TDM production (> control) up to 9 dS/m level of salinity. The line STM 1 produced 114% of TDM at 3 dS/m level, the STM 2 line could produce 114% TDM and the cv. BRRI dhan41 also produced 118.7% of control DM.

Objectives:

To evaluate the salinity effect on the growth and photosynthetic potential in some advanced rice lines

Methodology:

A pot experiment was carried out during the period from Feb-May, 2007 to assess the effect of salinity stress on 2 advanced rice lines, ( STM-1 and STM-2) ALONG WITH BRRI dhan41. The advanced rice lines were grown under different soil salinity levels such as control (0 dSm^-1), 3 dSm^-1, 9 dSm^-1 and 12 dSm^-1. Urea, TSP, MP and cowdung were applied @ 215, 180, 100Kg/ha and 15 t/ha respectively in each pot. All TSP, MP and one third of Urea was applied during transplanting time. Remaining Urea was applied in two equal splits in each pot at 30 and 50 days after transplanting. Each pot contained 10 kg soil. The experiment was laid out in a CRD with 3 replications. The commercial salt (NaCl) @ 15g, 30g and 37.5g were added to each pot to impose salinity of 3, 9 and 12 respectively. This amount of salt dissolve in 1 litre of water and this solution was then poured uniformly in the pots. The saline treatment imposed at 45 days after transplanting. The photosynthetic data were measured from fully matured flag leaf using Licor 6400 instruments between 1200-1400 day hours at maximum tillering stage.

Achievement/Findings:

Stimulating effect of salt was observed up to 9 dS/m salinity level in both Two M7 mutant lines (STM 1 and STM 2) in producing TDM. Similar response was also observed in BRRI dhan41.
