Performances of BINA Released Varieties in the Improved Cropping Pattern in Sathkhira

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

In the Binadhan-4 rice based cropping patterns, Binasarisha-5 had produced higher yield (1.29 t ha^-1), Binamoog-5, Binatil-1 and Binachinabadam-3 produced higher yield as 1.12 t ha^-1, 1600 kg ha^-11380 kg ha^-1and 2720 kg ha^-1, respectively. Rice (cv. Binadhan-4)-Mustard (cv. Binasarisha-5) – Mungbean (cv. Binamoog-5) appeared most profitable of all the altered cropping patterns with a net return of Tk 79742/= and benefit cost ratio is 2.45. The rice (Binadhan-4)-mustard (Binasarisha-5) cropping pattern when followed gave the second highest return (Tk. 69247) and almost similar benefit cost ratio (2.42). In contrast, the existing cropping pattern in the saline prone area, BRRI dhan39-Fallow-Fallow (used as check) resulted in very lower return (Tk. 14280) with lower BCR value (1.77).

Methodology:

Two altered rice based cropping patterns were evaluated during July 2005 to June, 2006 cropping season with a check current cropping pattern in the critically saline prone area at Sathkhira, Bangladesh. The two altered and the existing patterns under the study were: Altered pattern-I-Rice (cv. Binadhan-4) - Mustard (cv. Binasarisha-6) – Mung bean (cv.Binamoog 5), Altered pattern-II-Rice (cv. Binadhan-4) - Mustard (cv. Binasarisha-6) –Sesame (cv. Binatil-1). Altered pattern-III-Rice (cv. Binadhan-4) - Groundnut (cv. Binachinabadam-3) and Existing cropping pattern-Rice (cv. BRRI dhan39) – Fallow –Fallow.

At saline prone area of Satkhira, three altered cropping patterns using BINA varieties such as (i) Binadhan-4-Binasarisha-6-Binamoog-5; (ii) Binadhan-4-Binasarisha-6-Binatil-1; and (iii) Binadhan-4- Binachinabadam-3 were tested with the existing pattern, BRRI dhan39-Fallow- Fallow. All the three cropping patterns using BINA varieties resulted in the highest net return and BCR than existing one (net return Tk. 79742/= and BCR 2.45) with the cropping intensity of 300%. In contrast, the existing cropping pattern, BRRI dhan39-Fallow-Fallow (used as check) resulted in very lower return (Tk. 14280), lower BCR value (1.77) with the cropping intensity of 100%.
