Performances of BINA Released Varieties in the Improved Cropping Pattern in Noakhali

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

In the rice (BRRI dhan32) based cropping patterns, mustard (Binasarisha-5/Binasarisha- 6) and Groundnut (Binachinabadam-1) produced yield as 1.43 t ha^-1, 0.71 t ha^-1 and 2.47 t ha^-1respectively. The rice (Binadhan-4)-groundnut (Binachinabadam-3) cropping pattern appeared most profitable of all the altered cropping patterns with a net return (Tk 51540/=) and benefit cost ratio (2.07). Rice (BRRI dhan32) - Mustard (Binasarisha-5/ Binasarisha-6) – Fallow gave the second highest return (Tk. 33250) and resulted in benefit cost ratio as (1.76 ). In contrast, the existing cropping pattern in the saline prone area, BRRI dhan32-Fallow-Fallow resulted in very lower return (Tk. 14280) with lower BCR value (1.68). Moreover, the existing cropping pattern resulted in the cropping intensity of 100%, while the proposed pattern resulted in much higher net return and 300% cropping intensity.

Methodology:

Two altered rice based cropping patterns were evaluated during July 2005 to July 2006 cropping season with a check current cropping pattern in the critically saline prone area at Sonapur, Noakhali. The two altered and the existing patterns under the study were: Altered pattern-I-a. Rice (BRRI dhan32)-Mustard(Binasarisha-5/Binasarisha-6) – Fallow, Altered pattern-II-Rice (BRRI dhan32) - Groundnut (Binachinabadam-3). Existing cropping pattern, Rice (BRRI dhan32)–Fallow–Fallow.

At saline prone area of Sonapur, Noakhali, two altered cropping patterns using BINA varieties such as (i) BRRI dhan32-Binasarisha-5/6-fallow and (ii) BRRI dhan32- Binachinabadam-3 were tested with the existing pattern, BRRI dhan32-Fallow- Fallow. All the two cropping patterns using BINA varieties resulted in much higher net return and BCR (net return Tk. 51540/= and BCR 2.07 using Binachinabadam-3) with the cropping intensity of 300%. In contrast, the existing cropping pattern, BRRI dhan32-Fallow-Fallow (used as check) resulted in very lower return (Tk. 14280), with lower BCR value (1.68) with the cropping intensity of 100%.
