Availability of Residual Fertilizer Nitrogen in Successive Croppings

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

Availability of 15N labelled fertilizer nitrogen applied to initial crops, wheat and rice in the successive croppings of wheat-rice-wheat and rice-wheat, respectively, have been studied. Results showed that wheat recovered 36% of applied fertilizer N while the succeeding rice and wheat recovered only 9 and 2%, respectively. In rice wheat rotation, the recoveries were comparatively very low and equivalent to 18 and 2%, respectively. The relative availability of labeled fertilizer N in relation to residual fertilizer in soil decreased with successive cropping seasons mainly, perhaps, due to the conversion of tagged organic nitrogen to compounds of greater stability and partly due to microbial immobilization.

Objectives:

To study the efficiency of fertilizer nitrogen on successive crops in wheat-rice-wheat and rice-wheat sequence

Methodology:

The experiment was conducted at Grey Floodplain soil of Sonatala series located at BINA farm, Mymensingh. Each plot consist of an yield sub-plot and an isotope sub-plot for the first crop, wheat. The successive rice and wheat crops of the three crop sequence were grown in the same isotope wheat sub-plot. Nitrogen fertilizer as ¹⁵N labeled urea with 5% atom excess was applied at seedling of the first wheat crop only at the rate of 20 kg N/ha. At harvest, yield and yield component was recorded,. Grain, straw and leaf samples were collected from each of wheat-rice-wheat rotation for total N and ¹⁵N excess analysis. The collected data were analyzed statistically.
