Photosynthesis, Leaf Conductance and Grain Growth of High Yielding Rice Varieties Under High Temperature Stress

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

A pot experiment was carried out with four rice varieties viz., Binadhan-5, Binadhan-6, Binadhan-8 and Iratom-24 in plant growth chamber at BINA, Mymensingh during January to May 2013 to find out temperature tolerant varieties. The experiment was laid out in randomized complete design with three replications. Photosynthetic rate, leaf conductance, transpiration rate and water use efficiency decreased at 30^oC temperature than ambient.The highest grain dry weight and transpiration rate were found in Binadhan-6 while Binadhan-5 showed the highest photosynthetic rate under the treatments. Grain dry weight increased up to 24 days and there after it did not increase significantly. Photosynthetic and transpiration rate decreased with grain age. The highest water use efficiency was found in Iratom-24.

Objectives:

To assess the effect of high temperature on rice varieties and to find out temperature tolerant variety

Methodology:

A pot experiment was conducted with four rice varieties viz., Binadhan-5, Binadhan-6, Binadhan-8 and Iratom-24 in plant growth chamber at Bangladesh Institute of Nuclear Agriculture (BINA), Mymensingh during January to May 2013. The experiment was laid out in completely randomized design with three replications. Thirty-day old seedlings were transplanted in plastic pots on 18 January 2013. Each pot contained 8 kg of soil collected from BINA farm.Pot soil was fertilized with urea 1.72 g pot^-1, TSP 1.06 g pot^-1, MP 0.80 g pot^-1 corresponding to urea 215 kg ha^-1, TSP 180 kg ha^-1 and MP 100 kg ha^-1, respectively. All TSP, MP and one third of the urea were applied as basal dose. The remaining two-thirds of the urea were applied in two equal splits in each pot at 30 and 50 days after transplanting. Plants of tested varieties were kept at ambient and 30^oC temperature during grain growth period. Data photosynthetic rate, leaf conductance and water use efficiency were measured using Portable Photosynthesis System (Model: Li-6400XT).

Achievement/Findings:

Four rice varieties, viz., Binadhan-5, Binadhan-6, Binadhan-8 and Iratom-24 were evaluated at ambient and temperature stress (30^oC) during grain growth period. Photosynthesis, leaf conductance, transpiration rate and water use efficiency decreased with temperature stress and Binadhan-6 showed the best yield performance.
