Effect of Salinity on Physiological Attributes and Yield of Four Rice Genotypes

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

A pot experiment was conducted with four rice genotypes at BINA, Mymensingh during Boro season 2014. Four levels of salinity viz., control, 6, 9 and 12 dS m^-1were imposed on Binadhan-8, Binadhan-10, NERICA-1 and NERICA-10 at maximum tillering stage and maintained until maturity. The experiment was laid out in completely randomized design with three replications. Nitrate reductase activity, chlorophyll content in leaves, yield and yield attributes decreased with increasing salinity. Chlorophyll stability was better in NERICA-1 and NERICA-10. Binadhan-8 and Binadhan-10 showed lower reduction of nitrate reductase activity, root and shoot dry weight with higher salinity level. Grain yield decreased with the increase in salinity levels and the decrement was less in NERICA-10.

Objectives:

Methodology:

A pot experiment was carried out with four rice genotypes viz., Binadhan-8, Binadhan-10, NERICA-1 and NERICA-10 at Bangladesh Institute of Nuclear Agriculture (BINA), Mymensingh during Boro season 2014. The experiment was laid out in completely randomized design with three replications. To establish the experiment perforated pots filled up with 9 kg well mixed soil with cowdung and fertilizer @ 50 N, 25P and 25 K mg kg^-1 of soil. A polythene sheet was establish above the experiment area to avoid the rain water. Six filled pots were set in each glass fibre tray and filled the tray with water up to the neck of the pot. Sprouted three seeds were sown in each pot. Four levels of salinity viz., control, 6, 9 and 12 dS m^-1 were imposed at maximum tillering and maintained until maturity. Data on chlorophyll content in leaves were recorded at 13, 24 and 34 days after sowing (DAS) and nitrate reductase activity at 20, 32 and 40 DAS. At harvest, yield and yield attributes, root and shoot dry weight were recorded. Data were statistically analyzed and Duncan's Multiple Range Test (DMRT) compared the means.

Achievement/Findings:

Binadhan-8 and Binadhan-10 showed lower decrement of nitrate reductase activity, root and shoot dry weight where as NERICA-1 and NERICA-10 had better chlorophyll stability at higher salinity (9-12 dS m^-1).
